Need new HHD and storage setup.

Right now I have a WD 300 GB Velociraptor and two WD Caviar Black 1TBs (32mb cache,) for main storage. The VR runs my OS and all my programs. I have a few games on there too and only have about 30Gb of space left. The two caviar blacks are almost filled up with movies, music, games, TV shows. All my HHDs are from 09' and I've had my PC running almost 24/7 since then. I have my pics, a few movies, and most of my music that I want to save on a separate 500gb external for backup but I'm getting to the point where I don't want to erase movies anymore on my main HDDs to make room for new ones...need more storage space lol!! I don't expect my HDs to last much longer either.

I'm going to get a 256gb SSD for the OS and some programs to run on. Thinking about using the velociraptor to run all my games so no biggie if that craps out one day. But the two caviar blacks, im not sure what to do with, and I'm also thinking of a RAID 1 setup using some 3-4TB for all my movies, shows, and music.

The two cheapest 4TB HHDs are the Seagate and WD Caviar Green @ $164 on newegg. Seagate doesn't seem too reliable but then that's the whole point of raid 1. The greens might be annoyingly slow when clicking through music files...not sure. I could just get one good HD like the 4TB WD caviar black and keep using my others the way I have been and just make backups of the two 1TBs and then run those in RAID 0 (or no raid and leave em be lol.) Not sure what to do frown.gif.

All together that's going to be 4-5 HHDs and one SSD in my antec 1200 case but shouldn't be a problem.

Seperate question: My HDDs are sata 3.0gb and my motherboard is a Foxconn Bloodrage with 6 sata 2.0 slots. Am I suffering with read/write times by not having the new sata slots?

HDDs see slight performance boosts using Sata 3.0. As for a replacement HDD, its best to leave that question to Sean
