What is Bottlenecking My Buddy's new R9 270?

Thread Starter
My buddy is all excited that he got a new R9 270x edit: 270. He did all the proper driver cleaning, fresh install, etc, and ran 3DMark on it. For the sake of comparison, I ran 3DMark on my 7950. From the GPU charts i have seen, the 270x edit: 270 should be pretty comparable, if not slightly better, than my much older 7950. But the 3DMark scores tell a different story. i know benchmarks are not indicative of real worl performance but his 3DMark Scores are way lower than what the gpu charts show for that card.

He has an older system with an old AMD Athlon X2, etc. I'm wondering what would bottleneck the gpu performance?

It could be his CPU, or it could even be his PSU. What's the make and model of his PSU?

r9 270x vs HD 7950? The 270x is a re branded 7870 IIRC thats why its not beating your GPU.

EDIT the CPU doesn't help either I'm sure but teh fact it is a lower tier GPU is the main why wink.gif
post #4 of 50
for starters, as said the card is a 7870 with a factory oc. also, you have a 4ghz 6 core cpu and he has a dual core athlon II. your physics score is nearly 7 times his in the first test.

Oh, there we go. There's the problem. That Raidmax PSU is a real junker. I sincerely recommend replacing it ASAP. If this is financially possible, then I can help just as long as I know what store(s) can be ordered from and how much can be spent. Fortunately, it shouldn't cost any more than about $90 tops.

Sorry, but how does that help? I think your question has been answered. 7950>7870, and 6 Core 4GHZ Xeon>>>>>>>Dual core Athlon wink.gif

huge difference in cpu power affecting the overall scores (graphics score is very close in the first two tests) and a terrible psu.

The PSU may be suspect, but it isn't going to cause the "bottleneck".  The Athlon II x2 is a slow CPU, it won't shine well in 3DMark.  As others have stated the 270x is a 7870 rebadged, and clocked a bit higher, so naturally its not going to be your "older" 7950.
