My fevered dream (which I know will never happen) is if the total war guys get together with firaxis guys and make the best strategy game known to man. They both seem to lack what the other company has. civ games lack a good battle system meanwhile total war games well they do the same eras over and over and over and over and over...

GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!

this is going to be awesome, civ5 was amazing

Imagine having the period span from medivial all the way through space age. Imagine having tanks steam roll through musketeers. Imagine a tank never losing to pikemen because that should never fricken happen mad.gif. Imagine having a siege with off map artillery and bombers. Imagine having a army of spies (shinobi) stirring unrest in your frenemy's territory because they have the access to oil. Imagine cutting off trade routes. Imagine the parliament of SPQR in space

it's been a desperate wish of mine for years. biggrin.gif

Have you tried Planetary Annihilation? It's an RTS, but macro focused and pretty close to what you want.

I've been eyeing that game for a while now but as of now it's a little too expensive for an alpha game. I contemplate it every time it goes on sale.

Maybe those Pikemen have laser pikes. It's not like a tank can defend itself against an army of guys stabbing it at close range...

AWESOME!

I do not generally like games set in historical locations. Actually I tend to stay away from games taking place in "real" (i.e. on Earth) locations altogether.
I've never played a Civ game before, but I'll probably give this a go.

Actually its not impossible at all for an poorly armed force to take out an tank. During the winter war finish soldiers disabled and destroyed tanks with very rudimentary tools. One man got a medal for going in and prying off the tanks tracks using a crow bar. Others jammed the tracks using nothing but fire food and once a lone tank is no longer mobile its pretty much a death trap.

That's why later model tanks have the swivel mounted MG. They are there so that adjacent tanks can cover each other form infantry attacks but in rough terrain that usually not enough and so after this weakness was recognized it was pretty usual to see tanks and infantry working as an single combat unit.

Calling it now, balance fixes and content that should have been in the main game to be included in the DLC.

Well, there is already a game like this that has been released by matrix games. It's called Pandora: First Contact. It's a colonization game which looks and plays a lot like SMAC:

It's not on steam. It's sold directly through the publishers website. 29.99 is how much it costs and it is supported by the developer of the game who continues to update it.
