would like some advise fixing an R9 290 with drill holes in it

I recently purchased a R9 290 card as defective. It was a good buy considering about half the cards I buy as defective are actually fixable and serve me for years biggrin.gif

Today I mounted a cooler and installed the gpu. The setup sparked luckily for me I always test in a garbage AM3 board I have. Either way the Pci-e slot survived and I localized the spark it is next to one of the mounting holes.

To be more exact the previous owner has removed a amount of pcb substrate to mount a cooler this normally is not that much of a problem hell I myself used the dremel on cards in various occasions but in this case it is. The reason it is a problem here is because there is a voltage regulator that has it's traces very close to the hole at which he removed some of the pcb. With that we now have a short circuit since the mounting holes on graphics cards are connected to the ground.

Clearly the card is not really broken just poorly handled the thing is he had a mugen cooler mounted on it and had it connected trough a riser. I suspect that either the screws had some coating on therefore prevented the short then when he moved his pc he created some minor displacement making conduction possible. Which in turn fried his pci-e slot.

I put the card under a loop with a big lamp and I can see 3 shiny pieces of copper one of them is very very close to the mounthing holes and I suspect that that is the one that bridged.

My best solution I can think of right now is sealing of the open traces as good as I can with epoxy but I'm open to suggestions of those that are familiar with extreme videocard modding.

Leads so soft you could shave a mm off both sides that you suspect of bridging with a razor blade, you would´nt have to touch the PCB, then give it a a light coat of whatever on the area to seal it.
Sure I´m not the only one , how much did you pick it up for ?

That should have been in that ghetto thread, I would have like to have seen it, any photos ?

Wow what a photo, thumb.gif it has to live on it´s back .
could even just get a nice fine tip for the soldering iron as well and just run it straight between the bridged spots
good luck getting it going , it will be a steal if you do.

I am no expert and I belive epoxy will work. I have used rubberized paint before on projects and it has held up rather well. Sticks on good and dosent wear out. I hope it works that will be a good buy.
Yeah, that should work. I would actually use liquid tape and then use the epoxy after the liquid tape dried. Just for added protection.

I cleaned the hole on the card but it is rather distorted normally the lines of each pcb layer are stacked but in this case the lines are crooked maybe I should provide a good separation before sealing it of. If it shorts on me after the seal is on I can't really reach it easily anymore and I would have some chemical sealant evaporated into my room.
