Question about installing heatsinks

Thread Starter
I've got an R9 270 that I'm putting under water but since no one makes a full card block for it I have to use a universal + heatsinks. Could someone please help me make sure I put the heatsinks in the right places.

According to this picture I know I need them in the RED areas and more than likely the YELLOW, but I'm not sure about the BLUE, or GREEN.

The water block I'm using is an XSPC RASA, and the heatsinks are Enzotech Copper & Akasa anodized aluminum. I'll be installing them permanently with Arctic Alumina thermal adhesive.

The area highlighted in Yellow will require cooling. I can tell you that much right now. Not sure about the other areas so I will not comment.
Edit: According to the reference design, only the VRAM and GPU Die requires cooling. Everything else is fine with natural airflow from the GPU's fan. What version of 270 do you have?

This is the card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121823

I had to completely remove the stock heatsink and fans to install the waterblock. The only fans blowing on it will be the intake case fan.

I was thinking about taking one of the fans from the original heatsink and building some kind of shroud to blow directly on the card. Do you think that is a good idea?

Maybe this will help ... from an old discussion on where to apply TIM .... On full cover water blocks the hottest component is usually the VRM, especially on reference cards.

According to the cooler contact points, only the 2 centre VRAM chips require cooling, which makes be believe they are not VRAM chips at all.....
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Everything else only requires air from a near by fan.
Source: http://www.ocaholic.ch/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=1167&page=2

Here is what I would do if I was you. Stick heatsinks on the VRAM chips, plus ensure good airflow to the card, and call it a day.

Looks good. Take it for a test drive and remember, point a fan at the GPU to cool all the rest of the naked chips.

If you already have the heatsinks I would put them on the blue area also. At least on my card that area gets pretty hot too. I mean could'nt hurt. And do have a fan blowing on it.
