AM3+ vs AM3

Thread Starter
Hey all,
So I'm rather new to the forum and need some info. I'm looking to upgrade my socket AM3 dual core proc to a quad if possible. trying to find a worthwhile proc is proving a bit difficult (I'm a full time student on a rather tight budget). So if any one knows the answer t this I would greatly appreciate some input. Is AM3+ compatible pin out wise with an AM3 board? All of my Googling has not borne a definitive answer. Some sites say it's a matter of one pin difference some say it's only a software difference (I.E. an updated bios and you're good to go). I am so confused my head is spinning. If anyone knows this please you're my only hope! Well maybe not only, but I've been impressed with the general level of knowledge on the site so far. Thanks folks!

Physically the same, however whether its a good idea is up to the model motherboard along with if the manufacturer had provided the BIOS update for later chips.

What processor do you have now? Maybe a 1055T would be a good budget friendly upgrade?

It's an Asus M4A785T-M. I know this board isn't the best out there and somewhat lowend, but at the time this build was primarily to best the 360 and ps3 in performance. I'm still something like a year away fro really wanting to upgrade the whole shebang so I'm trying to do this piece meal and maybe sell the old parts to cover the cost. smile.gif

Here is the motherboard's support list"

I ran a 1090t in the exact same board. I would not suggest overclocking if you get an x6 on that board. The vrms are not good enough imo.

Yeah, heatsinks wouldn't hurt, I just put a fan blowing on them.
