4x4 RAM sticks - will it be slower than 2x8?

Thread Starter
I decided to go from 2x 4Gb RAM to 4x 4Gb RAM. Right now 2x 4Gb is in dual channel. The RAM I bought is identical to the RAM I have, so I am not worried about OC and compatibility. What I am worried about is that people say 2x 8Gb is more efficient than 4x 4Gb. Is that true? Can I expect lower OC? Bandwidth?

I hope games in the future will take advantage of 16Gb. People are divided... some say that Windows 8.1 utilizes all of available RAM to load, preload information, including game information. Others say that 8Gb is perfect for gaming and 16Gb is overkill...

I would be inclined to think that the 4x 4GB would be faster than 2x 8GB for the simple fact that there are more lanes for transport. Also it doesn't seem like RAM has a linear increase in circuitry, just larger and more numerous blocks of memory chips, which leads me to believe that larger sticks would have a lower capacity/speed ratio than smaller DIMMs.
