I have quite a few programs in my taskbar when windows starts and I'm wondering how many of them I can eliminate. Or which ones need to keep running in the background.

Programs consist of:
Realtek HD Audio Manager
Intel Rapid Storage Technology
Samsung Magician
Asus EZ Update
AI SUITE III
NVIDIA GeForce Experience

Now that I know:

  • Realtek HD Audio Manager -I have no clue. For now, use msconfig to temporarily make this stop starting with Windows to see what happens.
  • Intel Rapid Storage Technology - check out my mini-guide underneath this list
  • Samsung Magician - not needed. It doesn't maintain any settings. It only sets them once and then they're set. You can delete this out of the Start Menu Startup folder. Just remember one thing though: if you want it back in there, then create a shortcut to Samsung Magician with the following in the Target line: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Samsung\Samsung Magician\Samsung Magician.exe" /AUTOHIDE
  • ASUS EZ Update - Not necessary.
  • AI Suite III - Not necessary unless you are using it
  • NVIDIA GeForce Experience - Not necessary unless you're using it.

So, for Intel Rapid Storage Technology, you don't need anything but the driver. Do this:

First, open up Intel Rapid Storage Technology. Switch to Preferences and then disable "Show the notification area icon" (see how you don't need msconfig? hehe)

Now, delete the iaStorIcon entry which is located in one of these 3 Registry keys (I can't remember which one it is now):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You can also look for it in Autoruns: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

Open Services.msc and double-click "Intel(R) Rapid Storage TechnologyIntel Rapid Storage Technology" and change it to disabled. Its current setting is "Automatic (delayed start)".

Reboot and then you'll be good to go.
