Can you RAID different SSDs?

Hi All

If I brought this: Transcend TS128GSSD340 128GB

Could I raid it with my Corsair F120?

Yes, but the RAID speed will be based off the slower SSD's speed.

that is highly dependent upon the raid you chose, the drives, and your controllers.


If you're going for a raid0 setup, then theoretically you'd get double (some of) the stats of your slowest drive.

RAID does not double all performance.

RAID0 would double the sequential performance. However, the majority of storage access is random (90%+). Think about how often you do multiple GB file transfers to either memory or other high-performance storage.

Basically, RAID0 of SSDs is just not worth it.... you gain risks for virtually zero real-world benefits.

Please people stop stopping people to play with their hardware. If Stilldawn want to try RAID let him try.He will not gain 4k reads but everything else he will.

I am not stopping anyone. I am provided pertinent information.

He should be informed of the risks and benefits. It would irresponsible not to.

...and no, the other posts did not provide the best possible answer because they did not frame the definition of performance. If you want, I can write a few hundred words on RAID and performance. However, I distilled the information to the bare facts of the matter.

If you're putting them in to RAID0 to have a larger storage drive you'll be fine, performance on RAID0 SSDs is not always leaps and bounds.
Just be sure to back up any data you put on them, as you should with anything! smile.gif

Igor, I am saying this not in a mean or anything like that way, but rather to be helpful...

I have not read all of your posts, but the ones that I have seen the past few days, I get a very antagonistic vibe from. I am on my phone, so I am not going to try and find and link posts, but while I absolutely could be wrong and simply misconstruing the tone of the posts, I feel like I should sayso mething, because I believe that you have a lot to offer the community (and this is a strong community), and I would like to see you stick around for a long time and reap the benefits of the most intelligent and respectful computer forum (not to mention the forum with the best looking members wink.gif ).
I am specifically recalling the thread about NAND life, endurance, etc, because I read through (and responded) but it was quite apparent to me, again I could be wrong, but that you were generally making "high impact" statements that had no backing, and presented yourself in a way that said that you were not going to change your (opinion) and that your view is correct.

I apologize if I am off base, I have been "in my head" lately, after dealing with some significant personal tragedy and the ensuing emotional fallout, so I am willing tosay tthat I could well be wrong.
It is the way you responded to Duckie, a well respected, knowledgeable, and very easy going member, who also happens to be a forum moderator, that was the trigger to my saying this.


As for the topic at hand, I have a good deal of experience with RAID, in all shapes and sizes, from the top-level Areca 1882xi-24i I have in my heavy duty "monster server" (every electronic in the house has access, and furthermore the system folds when not in use; it's got a quartet of 8/12 Xeons, 192GB memory, Areca 1882xi-24i with 4GB Cache and expander, 10GbEth Intel NIC with two ports supporting aggregation/teaming, and 7 different arrays from2-drive RAID1 to few RAID10 to a massive RAID60 array, and also I currently have as of yesterday now 13 SSD's in various systems for various purposes).
I do audio production (full recording-to-master workpath), so I have spent a lot of time and a lot of money on figuring out the absolute best storage subsystem for a usage pattern that dictates SIMULTANEOUS many-GB sequential R/W and low/high QD small file random.

I will say that of the dozen or so SSD arrays I have run, from 2-drive RAID0 from the MB to 6x Intel Enterprise SLC-NAND 480GB in R0, R10, and R5....

I have found that with SSD RAID, unless you have TWO EQUALLY FAST ARRAYS between which you need to regularly transfer significant amounts of data, the absolute biggest benefit you will see is maybe a 2-3sec drop in game loads.
Now, if RANDOM IOPS scaled the way sequential does, I would be running a ton of arrays, but they don't. Even the class leading 1882xi with upgraded 4GB DDR3 cache, a four figure piece of hardware, will have minimal effects on randoms despite the fastest RoC (dual core) and massive and fast caching.


The bottom line is that, sure it can be fun to try it out, but I warn that you will be disappointed. It is good for a few benches, and not much else, especially without a second equivalent array.

SSD's are not bulletproof, so I'm also going to recommend against RAID 0 unless you have a good (ideally great), minimum of 3-tiers (one of which being kept offsite), backup regimen.



To finish, I will say that I have found that the absolute best thing you can do to alleviate the storage subsystem bottleneck is parallelism. My X79 rig (830 256GB, M5P-Xtreme 256GB, 840Pro 512GB, and 11 HDD including a 4x1TB WD10EZEX RAID10, 2x1TB VelociRaptor RAID0 for "holding", and other quality drives), running the SSD's and disks parallel with the dataset on each disk carefully planned so that in almost no usage scenario are any disks running more than a single program, with program caches located on separate dedicated cache/temp file drives....
It is the best storage setup I have ever had, and I went through dozens upon dozens testing out different "theories". I have not once had drive related stuttering or slowdowns.


So, in the case of the OP, run them separately! Use the one with the fastest speeds (4K especially) for the OS, and dedicate the other as a programs drive. Get the WD10EZEX if you want a dedicated games drive (or 2 for RAID0), as $50/100 will get you 1-2TB of space and will run games every bit as well as an SSD.

Probably not really worth mentioning but in combining these you would lose ~8 GB in capacity from the Transcend, your array would end up being about ~223.5 GiB

As stated though, the risk really isn't worth the reward.
Feel free to play around but be aware of the higher risk of data loss.
