TC-14PE or SB-E?

Thread Starter
It's getting hot again and when running my CPU at 100% it easily hits 70C. My PC doesn't BSOD and it's been running like this for years so I'm not really bothered about the CPU dying however I'd like to replace my H70 with a better air cooler as I am looking at replacing my meager 955BE @ 3.5 with an FX6300 and OC that above 4.5 and get much better performance.

The problem is I can't decide whether to get the SB-E or the PH-TC14PE. A lot of reviews put the SB-E ever so slightly ahead of the 14PE but at much higher noice level.

Thanks for any advice you guys can give as to which is better and can handle higher heat loads.

Are you okay with the big increase in noise? I wouldn't go with either as the Noctua NH-D15 is hitting stores in the next few days. It all depends if you use the first PCI-e slot on your mobo. If yes, go with the Phanteks. If no, NH-D15.

The NH-D15 will cost at least 1.5x the Phanteks but not cool 1.5x better. I'll wait for reviews but at this price I'd rather add a little and get an H110.

Have used Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme for some time. Good cooler and quiet unless I run the fans above 1200-1300rpm. Also using TC14PE for a couple of years and it's also very good. Also the new Cryorig R1 Ultimate, Silver Arrow IB-E Extreme, and new TRUE Spirit 140 Power. All perform nearly identical with same fans.

TRUE Spirit 140 Power is an amazing cooler for the price. Lenny over on Bit-Tech tested it on his i7 920 @ 4.2Ghz using TY-143 fans. Testing shows TRUE Spirit 140 Power 0.3c warmer with one fan at 1200rpm than NH-D14 was with 2 of the same fans at 1200rpm. Both running 2 fans at 1200rpm the TRUE Spirit 140 Power is 2c cooler, and 2 fnas at 2500rpm it's 3c better.. Remember this is NH-D14 with 2500rpm TY-143 fans, not it's stock 1200/1300rpm fans. Stock TRUE Spirit 140 Power uses a TY-147 fan. Same performance as TY-143 at same rpm.

http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=269339

On an i7 3690x @4.5Ghz TRUE Spirit 140 Power was 0.8c warmer than NH-D14 SE 2011 65/4c to 66.2c)

And at same time was 2.5dBA quieter (42.4c to 39.9c)
CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), default quality
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?288762-Thermalright-TRUE-Spirit-140-Power

Do keep in mind TRUE Spirit 140 Power is 171mm tall.

Looking at the one review of the NH-D15 I'd say the Phanteks is my cooler of choice. Hardly any difference between the two and the TC-14PE is much cheaper.

The NH-D15 is not a game changer which many people were hoping it would be so the TC-14PE is a good choice!
