Fan Controller For Gentle Typhoon AP-30's

I purchased 2 of the above fans for my rig and my question is simple:

What is the best fan controller to buy for the fans so I can change the fans' speed to at least a few different speeds ie) slow medium fast at the very least. Price does not matter I'm looking for the best (a few suggestions wouldn't hurt).

I purchased them from frozencpu and had them convert both fans to 3 pin.

Thank you all very much.

Manufacturer spec sheet (PDF): http://www.nidec-servo.com/en/digital/pdf/D1225C_hi.pdf

That fan is rated at 0.56 operating Amps = 6.72 watts
Its starting amp rating is 1.35 amps = 16.2 watts.
Its operating range is between 10.2 to 13.8 volts.

You should be able to use most any halfway decent fan controller with one fan per channel - seeing as you only have two of them you want to control - but I have no experience using a fan controller on any such high speed / high wattage fans. Just thought I'd post the specs as it may be helpful to you or others.

If you really want the 'best' and price is no object, then an Aquaero 6 XT is going to be it, and it will definitely be able to handle that and a whole lot more, but I don't think that's necessary to go that overkill if all you want is to control those couple fans.

If no one else with actual experience controlling those fans or others like them chimes in, I would suggest a Lamptron FC Touch or a CW611 if you just want a good quality controller that should easily handle the job.

Thank you very much for the reply

I'm not familiar with fan controllers at all. What do you mean by 1 fan per channel? Do the fan controllers have more than 1/multiple channels so I just need to buy 1 fan controller?

Thanks again

Most fan controllers will have multiple channels (multiple 3-pin connectors on the back to plug fan cables into) and a separate means of controlling the voltage / fan speed on each channel.

For example, here's a review of the Lamptron FC Touch ...

Best fan controller out there for your money is the Lamptron CW611.
Could be a bit overkill if all you want to control is your 2 fans.

The CW611 will be able to bring them down below 600 rpm for sure.
Not that you would need them that slow.
1000 rpm should be silent enough.

It can ranp up the fan speed automatically based on temperature.
Will accept flow meters displayed in Gal./min or Liter/hour.
Control your pump(s) and LEDs as well.

Are you sure? I didn't think an ap-30 could slow down that much, even with pwm.

Well, my 2150 rpm AP-45's can be slowed down to about 300 rpm at 15% speed.
And yes, they will start at that setting.

I say about 300 rpm because the controller sees fan rpm at 0 whenever below 1000 rpm.
So for sure OP could slow his fans down to 600 rpm.
100% sure he can do 1000 rpn.
95% sure he can do 600 rpm.

I have the AP-29 and I was able to turn it into a PWM fan.

My six AP29s are all controlled by one "pin" in the motherboard. They are all "linked" to the same PWM wire plugged in the motherboard and there is only one RPM wire plugged to the mobo (since the fans will all end having the same speed).
No need to spend for expensive controller if your fan already have the PWM function built-in.

I hope it is the case for you. These things are noisy.

In fact, I just tried 10% speed (1.2V) with one of my AP-45's.
Works just fine. But I'm not completely sure it would start every time.
So 15% speed is safe.
Tho, I can't think of a reason why anyone would want to run a Gentle Typhoon below 800 rpm.

All great suggestions thank you all.

Looks like my best bet is that mentioned fan controller and that's IF my water coolers built in controller doesn't work. I'm a worst case scenario kind of guy, always trying to think ahead smile.gif

Thank you all very much biggrin.gif
