Furmark hard crashes computer lately

Thread Starter
I know, I know, furmark just way overloads the GPUs with more than they would ever realistically handle in games or anything else, but try to ignore that for a second and pretend I said some other artifact scanner.

On one of my computers, I have a 3 or 4 (maybe 5?) year old antec earthwatts 650w power supply, and 2 GTX 570s in SLI. Other components aren't affecting it so don't bring it up. Before you say I should have a 750w power supply, I tested it on max OC with a kill-a-watt when I first got this set up I'm on now, and it only drew 520 from the wall (probably tested a year ago).

I haven't had any other program crash it like this, but I've also noticed in most programs it's only using one GPU even though SLI is functioning in games and a few bench/stress programs. And of course no other programs go up to 100% usage on both cards either. It just crashes as if you'd pressed the reset button, no blue screen or anything. It's instant, there's no delay at all.

Is this a problem with furmark itself, or could my power supply finally be at the end of its useful life for that setup?

Oh also I've been on the same drivers for months on that computer because nvidia stopped caring about their 500 series long ago, so I kept the drivers that have had the least issues. So it wasn't a driver issue. Also that would create a blue screen, not a hard reset, almost certainly.

Well its possible the PSU is failing, but I would try other applications just to confirm its not just Furmark giving you issues.

I know some peeps dont care to set it up in order to test it, but Folding@Home is about as aggressive as it goes. I would set it up, let it run overnight and see where you stand in the morning.

If you have the proper tools you can test the actual PSU voltages and see if their still to specification

Installed folding, I'll leave that on for tonight. Question though, should it take 12 days to complete a work unit? That... doesn't seem right.

I believe it varies on the WU (Work Unit) you receive. Also got to make sure its set for the GPU, I have been out of the Folding game for a while now but it would probably default to your CPU.

If your wanting to see if your correctly set up, i would visit the Folding forum, but for merely testing stability it should function as needed

It has an idiot-proof setup that uses both CPU and GPU. Once it got going it went down to 8 hours.

I think this is my serial # but it's the only thing I can find:

Sorry for the dust... been a damn long winter and I've had no desire whatsoever to go blow it out outside when it's freaking 25ºF in APRIL.

I pushed an overclock and now many programs are forcing a hard reset, F@H itself didn't, which is weird. But EVGA OC scanner and Metro 2033 hard crashed my computer. Time for a new power supply?

well an overclock will just raise instability into a higher priority since your stressing the system. Have you already tried stock first?
