Yes, its power draw that heats the vrms up. Vrms regulate power to the cpu and dimms and other control lines.

OK, 9-10-9-28 is close enough to 9-9-9-24. You wont lose any performance with the slightly looser timings. That first 9, CAS is the most important for performance. The last 28 or 24, tRAS is the least important for performance. The order of importance is 1-2-3-4/A-B-C-D.

What ram is it ? Can you post a link ? It might just need a hair more vdimm to run at spec. The Auto setting is most likely increasing the vdimm.

Legally theyre fine. You CAN get some overclocking with it, maybe 500mhz or so worth.
Just because other boards with beefier vrms etc can get 1000-1500 mhz of overclock doesnt make their statement wrong, heh. tongue.gif

I may try unlinked later, but it's running fine for now on auto. Maybe there is something else I can try to get more performance from the RAM? They're G.Skill Ripjaws X series 4GBx2 at 1866Mhz. The timings I was looking at before were actually wrong, factory timings are 9-10-9-28 like what is set.

Next time you set your Dram Timings manually to 9-10-9-28, set Dram Voltage to 1.55v.

No. Voltage has nothing to do with performance, only improves stability

MSI gets around this by not saying it was only made for a very slight overclock. Probably with a two core processor. Boards like the Sabertooth you can look at and see the massive heatsinks with the heatpipes. Minimum 8+2 phase power. They are made with six and eight core processors in mind.

I wouldn't bother trying to overclock beyond 4.0ghz on that board, just going to run into problems. Find a nice stable setting with turbo/APM disabled in the 3.5-4.0ghz range that runs with the least possible amount of CPU voltage to be stable (no errors in P95, for example). With a decent chip you can probably run ~3.8-4.0ghz ~1.20V, which would use about the same power as default settings while giving you a mild boost in average performance.

As far as memory speeds/timings go. For simplicity sake, use the XMP profile and set the speed to the 1866 multiplier. If you want to get sophisticated. Make sure the rest of the system is stable first, then methodologically work through a process of performance tuning the memory, starting with finding the highest speed that you can run 1T command rate with stability (use very loose settings to find this), followed by finding the lowest stable CAS, tRCD, tRP, tRAS, tRC, tFAW, tRRD, tWTR (more or less in that order of importance, there are others but they have minuscule effects on performance) You may need to increase CPU-NB voltage slightly (Don't bother using more voltage that your CPU-core is set to). You can also likely push up to 1.70V (or more) on the DRAM to achieve higher speeds and/or lower timings.

Don't expect significant performance gains from performance tuning the memory. A few percent improvement in some workloads is normal but that's about the limit compared to just running a good XMP profile.

Someone mentioned when I asked about using my PCI Express 3.0 GPU in my motherboard which only supports 2.0, they said that there would only be a minimal difference between using a motherboard that supported a 3.0 card. Can someone elaborate on this a bit? I'm looking at the transfer rates for the two and it looks like 3.0 has a transfer rate of 15.75GB/s compare to 2.0 which only does 8GB/s. It seems like 3.0 would give me a lot better performance, unless there's another factor I'm missing.

The factor you are missing is that the GPU will never leverage more bandwidth than the 2.0 bus has available in the first place, so there is little to no performance scaling to be had by increasing PCIe bandwidth.

Like going from 1600MT/s to 2400MT/s on the memory bus, sure that's 50% more available bandwidth, but it won't translate to 50% more performance in any real workload because the bandwidth available already exceeded what is typically leveraged in real workloads anyway.

The bottleneck is elsewhere in each case.
