Help me choose a motherboard for home lab from list.

Hi guys,

I'm trying to mount a home lab server on the cheap and I was looking on ebay for some boards, these are the boards I came across in my price range

771 socket, 1366 used is crazy expensive in europe

INTEL S5000PAL

Supermicro X7DBE MBD-X7DBE+

ASUS DSBV-D

Intel Server Board S5400SF

Supermicro Mainboard X7DBE

Intel S5000XAL

I plan using it also for light gaming, but primary use is really playing with hyper-v or exsi and virtualization.
Cpu's are a pair of E5440 and 16gb ram or more.

Thanks guys

Personally i would avoid 771 due to it using FB DIMM which suck a lot of power and generate a lot of heat

What is your budget? also if you have ESXI you do nkow it has no control panel until you log in from another computer? so why not just make a lower spec server purely for ESXI or hyper-V

Well I followed your advice, I had a chance to grab an Intel S5500BC this morning for cheap (95 eur delivered)

I know there is no control panel but I thinked you could install log part for esxi on vm-ware on the same server. Am I wrong ?

If yes looks like I'm forced to use Hyper-v, maybe it's better for a beginner.

Thanks for your time Norse.

ESXI its all remote except for a very basic network config and couple of other options on the physical machine.

Please bare in mind you may need an EATX case
