R9 290: can't install older driver

Thread Starter

All I get when I run the installer is the ability to install the install manager and the HD audio driver. This is after uninstalling the driver completely in normal windows mode, rebooting into safe mode, using Driver Sweeper 3.2.0 and even DDU and rebooting and trying again. The only one that I can install is 13.12 and newer, except I seem to be having problems with the driver version 13.251 that is included with the 13.12 installer so I want to try an older driver - but it seems AMD won't let me.

Notice the bold part please. I can install 13.12 and newer just fine. It's 13.9 and older that won't let me install.

So all driver packages 13.12 and up only give you the two options in the installer? (Install Manager + HD Audio)

No, 13.9 and older. As I said, I can install 13.12 and up no problem.

This is 13.9 after doing this:

Completely uninstall in normal mode of Windows

Reboot into Safe Mode

Run Driver Sweeper 3.2.0

Close Driver Sweeper

Run DDU

Reboot back into normal mode of Windows

Run 13.9 installer

Then, I get this:

13.9NoInstallOption.png

If I try 13.12, then I get this:

13.12NoProblem.png

Ok thanks for clarifying further. Does DDU remove all the registry values and all AMD folders? I'd try making sure all AMD/ATI traces are gone, if 13.9 still doesn't work, install 13.12 and uninstall (properly), then test 13.9/older drivers again.

Well as I said, I used Driver Sweeper 3.2.0 first and then immediately after that I used DDU just to be thorough. So yeah, absolutely all traces were gone.

Anyway, I did what you're recommending several times now. So, I'm in the middle of trying the Beta version to see if that driver is any better for me.

Dammit. The R9 290 came out after 13.9 and before 13.12. The drivers in both 13.12 and the latest beta are giving me this annoying problem:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1481695/short-0-5-to-1-5-green-yellow-horizontal-lines-blinking-all-over-the-place

So, I'm just going to say that my R9 290 is defective and call it a day.

Sorry if I sounded negative, didn't mean to tongue.gif But I'm pretty sure it came in 13.12, so installing an earlier version of CCC isn't gonna work, simply because it doesn't contain the R9 290 driver.

EDIT: By the way, what problems are you experiencing? Second edit: Missed your link.

I think Amazon.com broke the card. I forgot that it was packed in a box that was slightly too big with just one of those air bag pillows... ON TOP. So, the card's box slid around a good 4 inches on all sides during the entire trip from Amazon.com's warehouse to me. So, I'm going to call them right now and set up an RMA telling them that the card doesn't work, that it's "defective" (a key word that I will use). Then, I'll make sure that they pay for the return shipping and that I get all $489.99 of my money back.

After I get my money back, I might buy Candy_Van's card if inadroo can't come up with the $440 in a reasonable amount of time.

Anyway Dispersion. It's all good! :) I guess I'm just overly irritable right now. lol
