R9 290 to R9 290X soft-mod possible?

I was on the verge of buying eVGA GTX 780, but then I came across some info that AMD R9 290 can be soft-modded to R9 290X using 3d party brand air-cooling. Is that so? I love nVidia, but if I can buy R9 290 and convert it to R9 290X for the same price as buying TX 780 (non-Ti), which would be slower than R9 290X! What do I need? Are there any benchmarks?

You can't, as far as i know, mod a non-ref 290 to 290x. You'd need a ref. model that too from Powercolor / XFX. Here's a guide / database for the same.

Some cards were shipped using 290X cores but flashed with 290 BIOSes, and so you could flash a 290X BIOS on it and turn it into a 290X. However, I don't think there are any of those still shipping. There's a thread about it here:
