[DS] Sucker Punch Seeking More Ways To Use PS4′s RAM; CPU a Bottleneck - Page 7

I'm gonna bash Intel right now.

Screw my 2600K processor ( my first Intel processor) ever because no one ever cared to mention to me that it will only take FSB speeds of 1333 MHz and my 16GB kit is best at 1600...

A CPU that can tell me how fast my ram has to be ? -- Hell no I hate that Idea. Its fast, but system overall is not at peak -_-.

Soooo now I have to get Ivy processor , how retarded is that?

There are many games that target 60fps, but have to use ~720p (~44% of 1080p) or 900p (~81% of 1080p) to do it, and many of even those games spend time floating around 30-50fps, so one can definitely make the assessment that 1080p60 isn't readily achievable with the graphical quality that the devs seem to insist on

You don't have a RAM divider? Which chipset is this? Also, gratz on making wildly unrelated post to thread lol

Yes I think so, my board is z68 and supports Ivy processor... I'm thinking my board was more geared towards Ivy in mind vs Sandy -_-.

- Carry on thread

I want them to struggle so coding games for multiple cores is possible.

see idk why they didnt just accept they would be slower than intel and half the price, then release 10 core phenoms with lots of L3 cache and improved power gating on a lower NM but not so low as to be expensive.. i.e a solid slightly old but brute force way of giving higher per core performance but overall slower and hotter than Intel. Games wouldn’t be bottlenecked and people could still have fun overclocking

I seriously doubt Sucker Punch would drop the resolution for the next Infamous game, as they weren't too far off achieving a fluid fps near 60 while at 1080p, and that is with their very good AA solution. People would instantly be upset that the second Infamous PS4 game is getting a downgrade on resolution. I think with plenty of tweaking and revising and learning they'll hit 60fps more consistently at 1080p in the next one, but that's easily achievable since they've done a good job already. 2-4 years should be a good amount of time for them to revise and re-think for a better outcome for 60/1080p thumb.gif

Edit: They've set the bar, so they'll be looking to go beyond that next time like all devs try to (Uncharted/Killzone/God of War/Dead Space, for example).

meh thers always a bottleneck with consoles, last gen was ram, this gen is cpu. Can depend on the type of game too id imagine, open world like infamous vs say a driving game or fighting game.

Also pc's will have bottlenecks usually. perfect balance for all types of games and engines doesn't really exist.

I'm more concerned with just general lack of CPU power though - even with 8 cores, jaguar at those clock speeds is only a fraction of a 2500k, so come 2020 they'll have like half of the CPU power that anyone with a new midrange CPU in 2011 on desktop had. Being forced to code for 8 threads to get that level of performance isn't so good.
It depends, Jaguar 8 core is capable of up to 30K draw calls according to SP studio's presentation. That gets it at 60% ratio of the best, currently available 4 to 8 core desktop cpu's. Mantle debut presentation details on 4770k and FX-8350 draw call performance were 50K maximum.
The cpu is quite capable, i researched its capabilities: apparently, base clock of 1.6 ghz when needed the chip is able to turbo up to 2.7 ghz according to rumours of which I wouldn't doubt looking at the size of heatsink on the ps4 apu.

I think they're being very conservative with the clocks to help yields. Once they slim down the OS RAM usage, feel comfortable bumping up the cpu/gpu(maybe gpu) clock and that, then it will be an interesting view.

i bet SP are not used to the new CPU yet , on the other hand the CPU is made by AMD so no wonder there's a bottleneck

Right. I use AMD and don't seem to have any problems.
