Troubleshooting 2500k/z77ud5h build

Thread Starter
My dad's been running into a bunch of problems from the get go on his Gigabyte board and it's now hit the point where it won't power on.

Specs:

2500k (stock)
Z7u-ud5h
2x4gb rip jaws
Crucial m4 128
a bunch of WD mechanical drives
Win 7 home 64
Cogage arrow

The motherboard led lights up so we know it's getting power. I've tried using the on board power button in the event that the case wiring I'd damaged and still no dice. Checked wiring several times and everything looks secure. Yes I'm using stand offs in the case.

This problem started happening yesterday after swapping a dvi cable from my mom's system to my dad's, I really don't think it could have shorted his system though. Dad is really anal about his stuff and turns the power strip off when not using his system, could this be a potential problem source?
