Hell Forum!

I've decided to buy a SGS4 , I've previously used Cyanomod on my current sgs2. What do you guys think is the best rom for the sgs4 ?

I need both internal +SD card encryption included ( Might be standard in all new roms anyway)
Most of all to be secure

Also if you think I should get a different phone then please suggest =) I will be opening a new Thread for that also.

I used Cyanogenmod 11 on my SG4, it was pretty good. Right now I'm running S4 Google Play Edition ROM and I actually miss some of the features from CM11. I don't think im going back to CM tho, so I'm gonna sub to this thread for good suggestions

Theres so many ROMs out there its hard to try them all.

Edit: I might try Wanamlite - It should be TouchWiz without bloatware.

Paranoid all the way.

It looks and feels stock but they've added great features that just improve upon it. It's so seamlessly and professionally done that you wouldn't know that it wasn't Googles own ROM.

Hope this doesn't qualify as a necropost - I just see no reason to create a new version of this exact same thread.

My 2 year old is starting to be less and less responsive. Nothing TERRIBLE, it's just starting to show it's age.

I'm using the stock ROM, currently Android 5.0.1.

I'm looking for a new ROM that could help me with performance AND battery life (tall order I guess

)

I see CyanogenMod thrown around a lot. It's been a little over a year since this thread was first created so I'm sure there are some solid ROMs now to recommend.

Thanks in advanced for the help!

PS: If it makes a difference I have the SAMSUNG-SGH-I337

I came across this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/i9505-orig-develop/rom-cyanogenmod-12-t2943934

I suppose I'll need to get a MicroSD card - unless some of these ROMs can be installed via USB.

You don't need an SD card. You can update from the internal storage.

I recently flashed my S4 to CM12.1 5.1.1 unofficial.

Man I forgot about this post !

CM is top all round . The coding they do can also allow full and direct access to your phone hardware .Allowing you to do some pretty cool stuff ! Im on stock with Sonys 4.4.4 rom because of its features but CM hands down is top .

CM also has an app you can download and it will install it for you if im not mistaken .

Responsiveness seems to be on par with stock, but I did gain better performance in games due to improved frequency/thermal management.

Could you point me in the right direction here please.

I have downloaded Cyanogen from here: http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=jflteatt&type=nightly
Google apps from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/tk-gapps-t3116347

Do you recommend any specific software to get get my SG4 [ATT SGH I337] flashed with the new ROM?

I tried that whole "volume down + power button + home button" but it just kept saying "Downloading, do not turn off target"

What method did you use? Thanks!

I used to use ClockWorkMod, but nowadays I use TWRP. They both serve the same purpose, but TWRP is much nicer to use.

  • Download the latest TWRP for your device.
  • Also download Odin if you don't have it (I used version 3.07). Should be a zip containing multiple files that weigh around 1-2MB.
  • Turn your phone off, and start it in download mode (volume down + home + power)
  • Start up Odin, click on "PDA", point it to the TWRP tar file
  • Connect phone to PC and press "Start" in odin (phone will restart when it's done)

You now have TWRP recovery, which you can use to install custom ROMs, mods, and all sorts of other cool stuff. Copy the CM and google apps zip files to your phone, and disconnect it from your PC.

  • Power off and start your phone in recovery mode (hold volume up + home + power, then let go when the samsung logo pops up).
  • Perform a backup (optional)
  • Wipe data, cache, dalvik, and system
  • Go to install, and flash the ROM first, followed by google apps
  • Reboot and enjoy

Not sure where this "PDA" is

Just acquired a s4 SCH-I545 and recently updated to 5.0.1 Lolipop - great stock OS I have to stay, but can't leave well enough alone and rooting as we speak. Now I hope to upgrade to CM soon once I get this set and used to swapping/flashing ROMs & Kernals. Also would love to start trying to mod them myself in Mint Mate 17 (Linux)
