Crossfire High Temps

Thread Starter
Hi,

I'm getting really high temps for my Primary GPU and I don't really know how to solve the problem.

It idles at around 70C and reaches 100C whilst stressing.

My MOBO only had 2 PCIe slots which means they are extremely close together. During stressing tasks the fan is pretty much 100% and even needs to be high when idling which is annoying as it's quite loud.

Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

Thanks,

Luke

Switch the cards around. Maybe 1 card runs a lot hotter than the other by nature.
If that does not help, try pointing a fan in the direct of the GPU's
Last solution would be one of these:
PCI-E Riser Cable.

It may be that the cooler is not seated properly. You could remove the cooler, re-apply TIM, and reseat the cooler to see if the temps go down as even 70 seem to be quite high while idling. What model cards are those ?? Any overclocks on them ??
I'm assuming these are 6970s? If not, what cards are you using?

It's generally a bad idea to use crossfire/SLI if you can't put a slot of space between the cards, but the fact that you are seeing temps that high suggests that something is wrong. If you don't have the cards overvolted, it could mean (as has been suggested) that you need to reattach the cooler with new thermal paste. If you don't know how to do that, you could probably find some tutorials on youtube. Could also mean that you have a dying/dead GPU fan (is it spinning as fast as it should?)

70C idle is a major problem.

On a bad airflow setup with cards like you have sandwiched together, I'd say you shouldn't be alarmed if you saw temps even as high as 50C idle / 90C load, but 70/100 suggests a problem.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I am using a dual monitor set-up. I just checked and I am idling at around 48C with a single monitor - although that's not much help to me as a dual monitor is necessary.

I also swapped the cards around and it didn't make a difference.

Is there anyway to make the bottom card the primary? If not I guess I'll just try to re-seat the heatsinks as suggested.

Thanks

Clean the dust out of them. I had a similar issue creeping up when I had CFX 6970s, and a good cleaning solved the issue. Running multiple monitors will always bump the clocks up on the main card, but 70C is insane.

I think because they are blowing hot air at each other, it is getting hot in there. Try putting a fan or 2 drawing air between the 2 gpus.

Is this a new problem, or have your temps always been this high? Do your cards have stock blower coolers? How old are the cards?

He most likely has two reference 6950/70's sandwiched together and they are literally causing problems for one another. PCI-E Riser might be the best option.
