Old hsf transferable to new system?

Thread Starter
I got a (old) Noctua NH-U9B SE installed on my i7 920, and I'm about to switch to a i7 4770K, and I'm wondering if I can easily switch the hsf onto the new cpu. I've lost all instructions on how to install it in the first place (and the memory of how I did install it hehe), so I hope it would be doable. I seem to remember having to place metal plates on each sides or something...

Or maybe it's not doable at all, being on the completly new mobo?

On a side note, my hsf got alot of dust over the years (I kept a very bad Antec 300 casing opened, half the time), and although I tried hard to clean it off with compressed air (a can), it's not perfect. Is there a special liquid or technique I can use to restore the hsf to its former glory? Also, if I'm to remove it from my currect cpu, will I have to clean the old thermal paste off the hsf? (sorry here, complete noob... to bodly go where no dIggl3r has gone before!)

It all depends on if the backplate is compatible with LGA 1155. If the screw holes line up, you will be able to swap it no problem. I don't know the specs of that particular cooler so I am not sure if it is compatible with LGA 1155. This cooler did come out before that socket was released. However, 1155 uses the same screw holes as 1156 so if that works with 1156, which it probably does, it should work on your new 1155 CPU/mobo

You will need to clean off the old thermal paste and then reapply it on the new cpu when you put on the hsf.

that heatsink does not show to be compatible with the 1150 socket... you will probably need a new one.

Quote from link below "compatible with Intel LGA1366, LGA1156, LGA775, AMD AM2, AM2+, AM3 (backplate required)"

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?gclid=CJq--s_W4r0CFclDMgodvXIA7g&Item=N82E16835608016&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-_-pla-_-CPU+Fans+%26+Heatsinks-_-N82E16835608016&ef_id=UzK@4AAABQffZa@S:20140415141411:s

Alcohol will clean most gunk of heatsinks without a problem... use q-tips and a lint free cloth. ( I would only do this after removing the heatsink, of course)

Always clean and apply new thermal paste when removing a heat sink... best idea! (again, alcohol and a lint free rag works well. If you use q-tips, be very careful to get all cotton fibers off the base before re-applying)

It should be compatible. The spec sheet says it's works with the 1156 socket which has the same screw spacing as 1150 and 1155.

what muels7 said. If your cooler mount has holes for 1366 and 1056 / 1055 it will work 1155 holes are smaller spacing than 1366, & 775 is smaller still). If not contact Noctua for a free mount update for current CPU mounts.

1366 and 2011 are same spacing but 2011 uses different thumb studs into it's own backing plate.
1150/1155/1156 are the same mounting
