Memory Heat

Does the heat of memory effect how well it works? Is a memory fan a silly thing to install?

Heat can affect stability, for sure. Most DIMMs are fine without a fan, but I'd recommend using a fan on anything over 2400 MHz, and not just for the DIMMS...but also for memory VRM, which sits next to DIMM slots.

I took off my heatsinks on 2 sets of my G.Skills and they have been totally fine

Most memory used these days are good til about 85*C.

I DARE u to find a way to kill your RAM! I want success stories of killshots on RAM stix!

*edit* Assuming any RAM deaths might happen on watercooled systems... cuz theres no reason the average air setup shouldn't manage the heat

even memory heatsinks are useless these days, let alone fans
post #6 of 9
Granted, more cooling means longer life for any components... but... Personally it might be restricting airflow if I had one of those monsters (RAM fans) mucking up the front airflow blasting in from the front. not to mention, the added noise from the small fans they use...

The real question is, how shiny are they? shiny means u care!

they sellz em cuz peeps buy em, not because peeps needs em *oreo cookies*

Memory fans are actually extremely useful... At cooling the motherboard VRM section!

All DDR3 is rated for at least 85C chip package temperature, 95C if the refresh rate is doubled, provided the memory module is made of prime, non-overclocked chips, but almost no retail modules are made that way, some of the last being those 4GB Samsung Green miracle modules. OTOH cooling doesn't make overclocked marginal memory reliable enough because the problem with it is the overclocking, not the heat.

Cooling doesn't increase the longevity of memory modules.

Thanks for this tidbit. smile.gif

I think I plan to use a cooler, mostly because my ram is BLUE and im going to a white/black theme, this will allow me to cover the blue =p
