plex + any number of options.

yes they bundle themselves as being so, technically have the power and the interface but both the xboxone and ps4 have all the services you pay for .. but none of the features you actually need as a home content user.

They are one big subscription model

Why buy a Overpriced Mac Mini with lackluster Integrated graphics when you could just get a AMD APU?

Buy a Mac mini for plex, how would it be used? A 500 box for what?

I never said the ps3 was a media server or implied it, only explained the benefits of streaming content from a media server and that it was done through DLNA (oh, and let's not forget UPnP)

Mac mini or whatever, it was just an example. Google chromebook, AMD APU, or something else. My point was that there are lots of alternatives if DNLA is like a must for some people... that was my point.

Well yeah, Just the Mac Mini probably wasn't the best example. As that would cost more then a console tongue.gif

Hell! My Samsung GS4 has the ability to do HDMI output. That's what I use in my bedroom, I just connect my Phone to my TV with that MHL cable. S4 has no problems with 1080p content.

There are plenty of android HDMI sticks you can get as well for pretty cheap.

Though I think a modern day console should be able to be used as a Streaming box, with the ability to play any content. Pretty sure HD MKV files are the norm these days.

annoyingly my raspberrypi only just manages 1080p MKV full rate playback .. i mean really only just at 24fps but yea, raise the bar to something like a smart phone and you can push 2k or even im sure 4k content out to an extent. I agree, a 2014 games console should be able to do it but its the same route with all OEM boxes.. keep it subscription and DRM laden and make it hard for the home user to use his/her own content.

All I want is DLNA support.. That's what I miss about my PS3 and I'm half tempted to buy one just for the free PS+ games and DLNA...

Chromecast + Plex. You can make a server in ur PC and play and file format on ur TV and its only $30 + $5 for the app. It can also play music. Whats so hard about that. Stuff like DLNA will vanish and be forgotten.

It's simple. When you spend $400 on a home entertainment device marketed like the PS4 is, it should support DLNA. (Especially given Sony's involvement with DLNA, lol)

It doesn't matter whether it's a $30 chromecast, $40 raspberry pi, or any other cheap device, people don't want a bunch of different devices to manage.

Also, the DLNA support behind the PS3 had a huge following (look at PS3MediaServer and the dozens of devices, several non-sony, that it supports.)

Home entertainment? When has Sony said that? It has always been a straight gaming console, which people knew before it was released that it was missing these features.
