Thats the battle, resolution is masking the fact that games haven't moved on from primitive stair case edges and often even with tessellation offer extremely blunt angles on buildings and objects.

we seem to be increasing resolutions, lighting and textures at the expense of complex real world geometry

Still, nature has straight lines too. They would alias (is that a verb?) on a screen. It's why photos look better on higher res.

We got to admit antialiasing is not a fundamental filter, it's a workaround, a hack. It's advanced "smart" blurring.

Say you improve design, resolution can still benefit until we can not see it anymore.

but that's a contradiction in some ways. Nature has natural aliasing, its easy to see with your own eyes if looking at 'low detail' distance objects or as you pass by railings on a car ride.

i agree though. We are hacking the edge rather than dealing with the edge itself as an object.. in which case even when aliasing is gone (and how gone is it on 16K but on a very large screen ?) your not fundamentally solving the low edge geometry issue.

Isn't Adobe Photoshop one of the most complained about programs that doesn't scale with DPI for high res? Seems like a catch 22.

I don't understand why some people complain about UIs being too small when they get a higher res monitor, it's just something you should be aware of. It's one of the good things!
If you scale up photoshop's UI, you're going to be cutting into the workable space for the image to be displayed in while you edit it, and killing the point of a higher res monitor to begin with really.

If you're visually impaired, why not just go with a lower res monitor to begin with?
A lack of UI scaling isn't exactly a problem. If you can't find a low res monitor, you can run your computer at a lower res and scale everything up.
540p for 1080p, 720p for 1440p, 1280x800 for 1600p.

This is pretty much what you're doing when you upscale something simple like the calculator.

It'll look better (not as jagged) with actual DPI scaling, but this is just an idea of how much space it would take up. Kind of pointless.

I will be watching reviews of this thing very, very closely. Given that it's a calibrated IPS monitor, and the cheapest 4K display otherwise is still $650, and the extras, that's a lot of value.

Pixel density higher than the Samsung S5, or any other circa 5 inch 1920x1080 display. Overkill to the max - professionals have their workstations and there's little incentive for a game to play 4K games on a tiny laptop screen. At least this paves the way to a new standard. It also speeds up the 4K price deflation because more demand is there from manufacturers.

Imagine having a smartphone with 4K resolution. I'm looking at you Samsung Galaxy S6/7.

But as someone already said, Windows scaling is not mature. I would need to play with it to see how legacy programs behave.

If you implemented screen scaler correctly, you can play your games in 1080p. 1080p for a 15inch screen is still pretty sharp

It is indeed pretty reasonably priced. A 4K screen and 10 bit color at 1.5k. As far as ppi goes - it is usable in windows. You would just to be pretty close to the screen (~30 cm) to use it in windows. At the same ppi I have put on the 125 % scaling on mine and while not everything scales it's usable even at 100% once you get used to it (~few weeks for me) if you remain within reasonably close proximity of the screen. For the reference I'm using ipad "retina" screens as some of the displays at my PC.

20'' and 4608x2048 resolution array. It is a bit straining on 100% when working with texts but all editors I use support scaling pretty well (MikTeX, using TechnicCenter to edit that latex, Notepad++, etc). I usually just hit ctrl and give the mousewheel two clicks and it's pretty sweet. If I need to see larger chunk of code I just zoom back out to 100% and lean a little closer. Trick is to have that high ppi screen pretty much "in your face". Bcos windows scaling, as pointed out, is not as good as it could be. But windows can, actually, work with such high ppi screens. The ones I have are approx 265 ppi, this one is approx 290 ppi.

If Photoshop is bugged on DPI settings, Adobe really deserve a "lol" on their face, in real life.
