Programmer Needs Mechanical Keyboard - Quiet, Macro Keys

Thread Starter
Hi all. I am a SQL programmer that is in the market for a new keyboard. I've burned through a Saitek Eclipse and Logitech G110, both not mechanical of course. After talking to my boss, he said I should be able to expense a new keyboard. I am looking for suggestions that meet the following criteria:

  • Quiet. I personally love the clickety clack of cherry blues but it would drive my coworkers crazy.
  • Macro Keys. Doesn't necessarily need the 12 that my G110 has, but need several
  • Standard layout. Not one of those weird ergonomic layouts.

Looking for suggestions from programmers!

EDIT: No gaming on this, strictly typing.

I code in C/C++/Java, and my personal keyboard of choice is a Ducky Zero Shine MX Browns. If you need extra lighting effects, then go with the Shine II/III. Once you put o-rings under the MX Browns, you still retain some of that click-clack feel of MX Blues, while retaining a much quieter sound profile than MX Blues, more akin to not bottoming out MX Reds.

Unfortunately, it doesn't have Macro keys on it though :(. But it does have the standard QWERTY layout!

^^ Agreed with the Cherry MX Browns suggestion.

Maybe the Logitech G710+ is what you're looking for? It's MX Browns, comes with o-ring dampeners, 6 macro keys, and it's a standard/non-ergonomic design.

Check out the Corsair K95 or the Logitech G510+. You may have to switch out the switches to something quieter, but both have macro keys (corsair k95 has like 24 or something stupid like that).

The Brown is a tactile switch. What exactly does the o-ring do to it?

The 710 is a possibility. Really wish they didnt have the silly colored WASD keys.

It helps soften the "clack" when you bottom out the switch. It depends on your typing style...if you bottom out frequently, it helps a bit with the noise. smile.gif

That K95 is a good looking board but like you said, i would have to swap out the Reds for a different switch, which is a bit too much for an expense report.
