Nice, tho very few get the 3960X/3970X over the 3960K - same for IB-E, so I guess with your logic, 99% of s2011 i7s out there will be in the 2x range, if not better wink.gif

It is a known fact that performance doesn't scale linearly with cost, it never did.
Not in CPUs, not in GPUs, not in cars, not in nothing comercial that is limited by size/weight/physics etc.

Thank you OP. I didn't realize buying the flagship CPU isn't the best bang for your buck.

As processor performance scales up into server/workstation class, the only thing the price of the chip has to compete with is the cost of building more machines to cluster together. A CPU that is 50% faster can cost double, because that is still cheaper than doubling performance by adding another machine. this pricing emerges at the high end regardless of AMD or Intel. A $50-100 CPU will always deliver more performance/$ than a $1000 CPU when looking at just the cpu, but not if you include the cost of the infrastructure surrounding those CPUs.

As far as "extreme" chips go. (flagship, cost no object, targeted to consumers who have no budget), that's an entirely different price class that has no bearing on performance/$ because it is simply taking advantage of the fact that there is wealth out there, that is willing to pay for extravagance. Tapping into that market for extravagance is smart, as it means that Intel can sell a few chips at extraordinarily high price points. That's good for their bottom line. When the FX-9590 first came out, AMD did the exact same thing, wasn't it like $800+? Having extravagantly priced flagship parts with cost-no-object pricing is common in every industry.
