OC GPU or CPU For Skyrim?

Hello,

I am just a newbie on here looking for advice/suggestions.

I have purchased Skyrim not too long ago and I have been spending time configuring/downloading numerous mods, including many ultra-high graphic/texture mods. While testing these mods , my FPS shifts between 50-60 FPS and often dips below 50 FPS while at Riverwood. I would like to get close to a stable 60 FPS.

So what you recommend I OC, the GPU or the CPU? Here are my specs for my computer:

GPU: EVGA GTX 780 FTW
CPU: I5-4670K
CPU FAN: CM Hyper 212 Evo
MB: ASUS Z87 Plus
RAM: DDR3 1600

I have not OC before so I want to approach this cautiously. Thanks.

Lower some settings, like AA/Shadows, and see if that fixes the dipping. If it does, overclock the GPU.
If it still dips, with AA lowered, overclock the CPU.

..or overclock both.

You shouldn't have to OC anything just disable your VSync. Make sure your drivers are up to date too! Heck try 337.5 beta driver! VSync will stop you from putting out anymore frames than what the monitor can handle, it's good to have on but you won't get anything higher than 60 if your monitor is 60 hertz.

That is odd, my GeForce Experience stated my drivers were up-to-date with 335.23 driver. I just downloaded 337.50 moments ago.

I have AA turned off in my game. I am not sure how to lower the shadow details right now but they are at Ultra according to GeForce Experience.

I have heard that turning off V-sync will mess with the physics and timescale for the game.

I am going to test the game right now with the new drivers to see if that makes a difference.

337.50 is a BETA. I do not believe the GeForce Experience auto-installs BETA versions, or recommends them.
Turning off V-Sync shouldn't cause physics to de-sync, that would be quite terrible design. Maybe it does.. but it shouldn't. Look more into it.

As for shadows, I do not have Skyrim, but as it is made by Bethesda and all games I had from them had that setting pre-launch, you might have to launch it with the shadow settings. GeForce Experience probably does it that way without showing it.

Gotcha about the beta driver. I did not experience any problems with the beta driver when I loaded Skyrim again.

There are a lot of players that have stated those type of issues when they disabled V-sync. I think I rather keep it on for the time being.

I found the shadow detail options and lowered it from Ultra to High to see if there was a difference. The FPS does not go below 50 FPS but it still goes near 50 at certain points when I head for the road at Riverwood. Still not very consistent at 60 FPS yet.

Any other recommendations to adjusting the settings for Skyrim? I am running RealVisionENB if that helps in recommendations.

Okay, keep V-Sync enabled. I got tired of objects exploding when I entered houses. It does happen...

Anyway, Skyrim only uses two threads to run the game. Please watch Task Manager while playing, and see if the CPU usage of "Skyrim.exe" is at 50%. Also, you need something like MSI Afterburner, or EVGA Precision X to monitor GPU usage. My 680 with the 4096x4096 texture pack doesn't hit 90%+ GPU usage. You should hit that 50% CPU limit before the 100% GPU usage.
EDIT: It may be "Skyrim.exe" or "TESV.exe"

Oh that's why that happens. Like my Horse getting tossed into the air?

I never use VSync, only reason I even did was to get rid of tearing. But my monitor is 96hz and doesn't suffer from tearing.

I've had things like my character's collision box was 30ft away making waves in the water in Dawnstar. Other times, it will cause bowl that have stuff in them to go flying. Weird things happen...
