Have a little money to blow, but what should I buy?

Thread Starter
I have up to $400 maybe a little more or less to blow on my computer after doing a couple freelance jobs and am wondering what I should spend it on for my computer. I'm a sucker for eye candy and performance like the lot of you thumb.gif
Specs are in the sig, but I'll type it here too:

Case: NZXT Switch 810
Mobo: MSI Z77A-GD65
CPU: Core i7 2700K @ 4.8ghz ( I can get 5.2ghz easily, it's a Golden Chip)
Cooler: Corsair H100
GPU's: 2x GTX 680's 2gb each
Memory: 16gb Corsair Vengance @ 1600
PSU: Corsair AX1200
SSD: OCZ Vertex 3 240gb(I'm about out of memory actually, but I can clean it up and reformat and have probably 100gigs or so)
HDD: 1TB Seagate 7200 RPM with roughly 350gb left (I can clean this up too)
Backup: 160gb WD 7200RPM (Nothing on it really)
Monitors: Qnix Glossy PWM free 2760x1440p @ 120hz 27" and a 25" PoS HP.. lol)
Keyboard: Razer Blackwidow Ultimate (first edition when they came out)
Mouse: Razer Mamba (when they first came out)
Headset: Razer Megalodons (When they first came out)

That being said, my peripherals perform fine, but they are getting a little dated and there really isn't anything much better out there, I wouldnt' really see much difference in the peripheals, outside of having some shiny new ones that I can grease up with all my foody fingers haha. But if you have some suggestions, shoot them to me, I don't mind.

If I had the money, I'd pick up 2 new GPU's since 2gb is rather low for the res I have now, but I don't exactly have that much money for 2x 780Ti's or 2x R9 290x's I don't think, unless I can guarantee a sell on my GTX 680's. And upgrading to a single card solution doesn't exactly help me very much since the 680's would likely outperform them, and they're golden. I forget what I got these puppies to clock to, but it was good.

My motherboard and CPU are rather dated, but it's a golden 2700K and it running at 5.2ghz is still faster then a 4770K at 4.8ghz... and cooler.
My SSD is also getting a little dated and a brand new SSD is one of my top choices since they perform better and the price is nice now.

How does a 840 Evo 1TB compare to a 400gb 840 Pro? According to some benchies, the Evo actually performs better at that size then the Pro does.

I thought about buying 16gb of the Corsair Platinum 2400mhz ram, just cause they look so freaking sweet and I'm a sucker for eye candy as I mentioned.

I thought about rebuilding a water loop, but I don't plan to cool the GPU's since I'll be upgrading them sooner then later.

I thought about getting a pair of nice cans and a DAC/AMP as a choice, but I would rather spend it on the PC then the cans, but what do you guys suggest?

I have a hard time picking what I want tongue.gif

Sell the 2 GPUs and use that money plus extra to buy 2 new ones?
Maybe new fans across the board? Scythe? NB e-Loops? Cougar Vortex?
H105?
Another SSD?
Seems like a solid build IMO.

The first question that you should ask before you spend money on an upgrade is, does my rig do what I need it to do and am I happy with it?

You pretty much got all of your bases covered, for the GPU I would just hold off on upgrading them until the 8 series comes out. Since you are only running a single 1440p for gaming.

for $400 you would have enough to have a nice CPU loop. also if you put your 680s in the loop you could perhaps try to flash a 770 bios on it so that you would have GPU boost 2.0 that would benefit from having the cards in a water cooling loop, and blocks for it are fairly common.

you could buy some nice headphones, like you said, a nice amp/dac with some bookshelf speakers are a nice edition as well.

maybe think about a new desk or chair?

maybe undertake a case mod, you have enough to buy a case and some tools.

(or go on craigslist, buy a beater car, drive the crap out of it and have fun with your friends.)

Yeah, I know it's a pretty solid build, but I'd rather spend the money before my wife takes it, haha.

I might upgrade just for the cosmetics, I really wanted to get a nice color scheme down for my overall build when I rebuilt this computer, but I sorta lost interest at that and never touched it.

I'm running with a white case with white cathodes. A blue/black motherboard and blue peripherals. So the scheme isn't exactly color coordinated, doesn't look too bad, but not the greatest either.

I also thought about to just keep saving and buy a Cross Desk LOL. I do need a decent desk, but there is no IKEA around here, and nor are there any decent furniture stores and I'm not that much of a handy guy to build my own frown.gif

If you need a really big desk, you can go to Home Depot or something and buy a solid wood door blank, and use some saw horses to hold it up, or some night stands or something haha. Someone has a build log on OCN it's like cheap desk or something like that..

If you like eye candy maybe some UV LEDs with a custom loop with UV dye. I really like the look of rigid acrylic with distilled water with clear blue UV dye, it looks like regular water under normal light and under UV it glows like radioactive heavy water.

Perhaps a new power supply with sleeved cables?
Or buy some LutroO custom sleeved cables?

You could replace your fans for better ones maybe?

Or if you sell your GPUs, and then buy dual 780s? If you can...

Still haven't decided what I want.

I'm contemplating between the following...

1. Asus Maximus VI Formula (currently have an MSI Z77A-GD65
2. Samsung 840pro 512gb or 1TB Evo
3. Water cooling loop, CPU only
4. New case (I like the Corsair Carbide AIR 540 (it looks coool!)
5. New peripherals, my Mamba, Megalodons and mech keyboard are aging quite a bit (2-3yrs for keyboard, 4ish years for mouse/headset) They're still working solid though!

All my Razer stuff has died with two years, so i dont think Razer is all that great if you use your PC every single day for more then 6 hours

Solid build, solid build

First, try to put your money in a bank account or something that your wife can't get access to (don't know if it's only me but my money is my money, and my girlfriend's money is her money rolleyes.gif ) You don't have much to upgrade, so I would keep that money for the upcoming AMD/Nvidia cards (which will probably be some refresh ... ) Last year, i've bought a 25$ Asus soundcard and 125$ Beyerdynamic...best upgrade (But I listen to a lot of music too!)

If you really want to blow that money, change your headphone for something better like BeyerDynamics or Sennheiser and buy a nice sound card or DAC (check Asus for soundcard and Schiit for DAC, that's a good start)

I don't think changing your cpu is top priority, especially since Nvidia and AMD are going for low level API/Drivers
