I have looked at Steam HW survey from time to time - and it seems there is quite a large population that uses Steam on laptops. Looking at ars most popular steam games list:
It seems to me that the first half, at the very least of that list will run rather well on quite modest hardware. I mean the Source engine is very
well optimized. I mean it is lightweight enough to run at 10 megapixels with just a single 6770 GFX card (that is 25% higher than 4K resolution) with some medium(ish) settings. On a single 7870 one can already do 60+ fps with all the bells n whistles as far as they go (The Lost coast benchmark mentioned also in the Ars article). Later Source titles did ramn ofc effects somewhat up, I remeber having to run, for example Portal 2 on a single 6770 at mix of low/medium settings for smooth gameplay at 5400x1920 resolution. Which is still impressive considering the resolution and how .. well .. puny .. the 6770 is for that resolution.
I had a latop with mm .. X800 GFX if I remeber correct. Really old, that has some problems running Half Life 2 I believe at 1280x800, but it was .. sort of .. able to limp along.
