MSI Z87 MPower *not* MAX

Thread Starter
I'm a little bit lost here. I just got a MSI Z87 MPower, and not the "max" version. I need to say it as it seems NO ONE here has that motherboard, or... I'm unable to find a thread for it. I'm waiting for my hsf (which I should receive tomorrow), and I'm not sure how I'm supposed to go about things.

I've been told to check the MSI forums, which I did, and its even worse than here; at least here everything is well divided into categories. I look at youtube videos about overclocking that mobo, there's almost nothing. It's as if MSI sold that motherboard to 12 persons, and I'm one of the "lucky" ones.

Can anyone take a good 2 minutes and really help me here? Would I need to update my bios right of the bat, do I press the OC Genie button right of the bat? What to do, what to doooo...

You could just press the OC Genie button, but my guess is it's the same Bios settings as all MSI Z87 boards (G43, G45, GD65, Max, Non-Max & Xpower).

Check out these settings which are identical:
MSI Z87 Xpower (Click to show)

MSI Z87 Mpower Max (Click to show)

Source.

You can duplicate the above settings with your Bios. Here's also a video for a Bios walk-through for your specific board.

You also need to download the latest Bios from here, unzip it, put it on a flash USB stick and boot into Bios. Choose the option to update Bios from a USB Flash drive.

Which cooler are you getting and what sort of OC are you looking for?

I'm currently using a *brand new* be quiet! Shadow Rock 2 hsf. Strangest thing, in the big list of overclocked 4770Ks, *no one* has that hsf! lol! Well, that being said, I was expect 4.0 to 4.2Ghz, since I didn't de-lid it. Was told I could fetch 4.5Ghz, a good news I suppose. Was also told to wait a couple of days, to run at clock speeds for a little while, before overclocking. Guess I can do that.

But I made just a little test, a hockey game I encoded last night on my i7 920@3.7Ghz: I was getting about 56fps. Used the same encoding settings on my stock 4770K, and 68fps... 21% faster, if you call this a real test. I was reading webpages saying it was almost 2 for 1 (I guess stock vs stock speeds), so in my mind I wanted at least 30% increase to be "satisfied". I'm currently not hehehe.

Put the 920 back to stock speeds (I think 2.66GHz) and you'll get the 30% increase, might be even slightly more.

Little silly to assume NO one has the board. tongue.gif I rather enjoy mine.

I'd suggest just pressing the oc genie button.
