Is 3Gb enough VRAM for BF4 at 1440p? - Page 3

Try these, it gets me well over 100 FPS steady in Locker. Most of the settings have very little visual difference between high and ultra anyway. Sometimes when I change settings while in game, it doesn't run quite as smoothly. Just quit out after you make the changes and re-start.

thanks, ill give ti a shot! What res scale can you play up to before you run out of vram with those settings?

I can run up to 145% but it really kills framerate. The game won't suddenly run out of vram at any particular point, but the FPS will decline and eventually you'll start to have hitches/freezes. The vram usage displayed in PrecisionX etc is only allocated memory - it doesn't really tell you how much is crucial to performance. A lot of games will allocate most of the vram even though they don't really need it. I think a lot of people see that vram usage number get close 2 GB and worry they're running out of vram, but actually that number doesn't really mean much.

Resolution scaling at 100% is the best option for most people, that's what I use. Anything at all below 100% generates quite a bit of additional aliasing (yuck!), while going above 100% is essentially a very costly anti-aliasing method. If I really want better AA I just turn on MSAAx2 and bump everything else down to high to keep framerates up.

What is this resolution scaling you speak of, and is only in BF4?

That is probably not the fault of the 670's then. As is your main question you would only see this symptom if you were hitting a memory limit (RAM, vRAM) somwhere or maybe pulling data from a storage drive. Since Luck100 has mentioned that he can run with the scale at 100% without drops then the problem lies elsewhere. I see you are on Win7, try disabling Aero if you haven't already and/or Windows Desktop performance features as this will lower overall vRAM usage. Try not to have any background programs that may fill up your memory.

I just tried running those settings you posted, got the following results on a 64 man server with about 25 players on:

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
4154, 49281, 44, 110, 84.292

Then I tried with AA off:

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
31768, 300000, 72, 182, 105.893

It plays smooth, but not quite as smooth as the settings I had before at 85% res scale.

I would not get 3GB cards right now because you will face the same problem in one year. Should have seen it coming going with 2GB Nvidia GPU instead of 3GB AMD. If you had 2 x HD 7950s you would be rocking the game.

I play BF4 at 1440p with everything maxed out including 4msaa 105 res scale. My frames are around 90-100 average on most maps, 70-90 on the poorly optimised maps like Siege of Shanghai. Almost never see my frames drop below 60 unless a tank blows up in my face, buttery smooth.

When i check MSI afterburner it says i'm using over 3GB of V-ram sometimes up to 4gb so i wonder if that's right? Need to run some tests

I don't think 3GB of V-ram for you should be an issue given my performance, though you might want to look at 4/6 to be safe.
