Is 3Gb enough VRAM for BF4 at 1440p? - Page 4

Guys, I'm trying to make the point that your performance issues are not necessarily because of VRAM.

Just because you have 2 GB VRAM and precisionX or afterburner shows nearly 2GB VRAM allocated DOES NOT mean you are "running out of VRAM" from a performance point of view. It was discussed nicely in this thread. Go down to the last few posts, starting with this one from @brettjv:
Quote:
These tools all just give you various ways of looking at 'allocation', not real-time 'usage'. A true usage measurement would be 'how much vram does this particular frame I'm rendering right now need'. It would include of course frame buffer allocation, along with the file size of every texture displayed on the screen at that particular moment, along with probably some allocation for storage needed by instruction code (which would be inherently somewhat nebulous).

If you were actually seeing what was 'used', there'd be large variances occurring constantly, based on the particular scene you were looking at. Go stare at a wall, your usage would instantly drop. Then looking at a city-wide battle scene from a rooftop, your usage would be dramatically jump up. But we don't see this in any of these tools, do we?

None of these tools are really telling you what you're 'using' to render the particular frame you're looking at. To do so would be extremely taxing on your system I suspect.

and then:
Quote:
So these tools give you an indication of how much is being used by showing you how much is being allocated. I think the majority of people out there think it's actual usage and then start buying new cards because their hitting their max, just the other day someone wanted to sell his 670 for a 7970 for more Vram. 27" monitor.

Yup. In reality it's roughly like if you have 2GB of vram on a 1080p monitor you have the next 10 minutes worth of textures sitting their locally in vram, but you if you only have 1GB you may only have the next 3 or 4 minutes worth.

So what happens is that your LIKELIHOOD of sudden slowdown (due to real-time system ram fetches) goes up, but it's by no means certain ... you just become more dependent on the efficiency and predictive accuracy of the caching mechanism for textures to keep your fps consistent.

I agree with you but to be fair if you only have 2048MB of Ram and you see MSI AB reporting 2032MB used suddenly drop down to 1970~MB with a respective FPS drop then you know it's paging somewhere be it system ram or storage. The only thing to do then is to get more memory, lower memory usage(settings) or wait for a patch that stops it.

I have literally shut down and swapped out then rebooted my PC, going from 2x 680 Lightning to 2x 780Ti Classy, just to see what the same exact game wouldread f or each re VRAM.

(now, the 680Ltg's are no joke; one held my in a top spot for GPU benches for months... They both run over 1500core and 8000mem on ambient water for benching)

I have 1080p, 1440p, and 1600p displays, and in every single case, games would read as "using" more memory, despite the settings being identical and no fluctuations in frame times.
To make it a more fair comparison, I did the same with my single 670FTW (1428c/7880m) and friends 670FTW 4GB (1302c/7344m). Even with the higher resolution screens, my card performed better universally, but maybe 1/3 of the time the 4GB card would read in excess of 2.5gigs "in use".

I have been using larger than 1080p res for years, and hearing the same VRAM scare for as long, but I haven't seen a single instance where I'm convinced it's anything but mass panic.

If the VRAM is really insufficient but the GPU is not at 100% load you will get the typical 18-21 fps.

In most cases you'll only get "reload stutters" or whatever you want to call them.

I agree with nleksan, it's mostly just panic. And cards like the Titan are imo completely unnecessary or let's say imo it doesn't make any sense to spend like 300$+ just to make those small stutters go away.
Allthough if you want to do something crazy like 4K resolution with 8xSGSSAA you will need a Titan or Titan Black. But even 4 Titan Blacks will probably run into issues renderig games at a reasonable fps rate at those settings
