Speaking of that, I have a question. If one wishes to record gameplay and the game doesn't play well with Crossfire, is it possible to set 1 GPU to play the game, and 1 to record the gameplay?

Yea 1 x 295X2

The GPU doesn't record the gameplay - the PC does that via some 3rd party program like Afterburner - but yea you could still record gameplay with 1 GPU disabled

I was under the impression that the 3rd party program used the GPU to do so.

Well the GPU renders the game - so Afterburner may well get it's images from there, unsure, but the GPU does not record anything, the software does that

But if you have the 2nd GPU disabled, it's not rendering the game, so it couldn't be used to grab the video/images from it - it's idle when disabled

Just because you have disabled Crossfire for that specific game, it doesn't mean that the 2nd GPU becomes unusable, right? Couldn't it be doing some other task? Like if you were rendering a video in Vegas (albeit at very low priority so it doesn't ruin your gaming experience)?

To be fair, I just read a bunch of places that one needs a powerful GPU to record games. I need to upgrade my GPU regardless, so I'm still gonna buy the 295x2, but I'd be nice if some place with clear instructions could be found. But this is not the place for that, so I'll leave that be.

I've never looked into it - but afaik, Afterburner uses the CPU to run / do it's tasks, not the GPU, but Im not the dev

You don't need a powerful GPU to record games, Ive been doing it since a few GPUs ago, way less powerful than this 295

Not sure why you'd want to render something in Vegas while playing a game though, but each to their own wink.gif

Lol, I wouldn't. I'm just considering the possibility of having the other GPU being used for something else while gaming.

Also, it seems AMD GVR uses the GPU to record games, so maybe that one could use the idle GPU?

I don't use Raptr / GVR, not a fan of it at all - Afterburner does everything I need, screenshots, videos, Overclocking, OSD for just about everything your hardware is doing - and no annoying bloat

No doubt you could probably get the other GPU doing something else with enough know-how / coding, so long as the game does not lock the GPU out from other apps but I've never read about it, or felt the need to try it

I guess you could bitcoin mine with one and game on the other, but I have a feeling something would go wrong somewhere along the line

Personally I use my GPU for gaming, that's it - and when I'm not gaming, browsing

Finally ordered my 295x2 from Amazon!
It's a Sapphire, so I'll cross my fingers and hope it won't be defect.

I'm well aware that they produce all the reference cards, but still.
Who knows, maybe the other brands pay them to make their own cards slightly higher quality.
But as I said, I just hope it's not defect.
