Need help overclocking 4770k (Maximus VI hero) to 4.5 with good temps. Stock hits 78c in prime95

Hey everyone. Can anyone help me with overclocking my 4770k. I am able to get it to 4.5, but it takes me 1.285v to get there. I really like it to be at 4.5 for performance reasons (gaming- gtx 780 sc acx). I'm using an H100i, and my temps are extremely high when running prime95. In fact, I can't even run prime95 (any stress test- intel burn test, etc) because it hits 100c and I have to end it. 4.3 is the highest I can use stress testing, which it hits 85c+.

Right now, I reset my 4770k to stock to see what temps I can get in prime95. For only 5 minutes, I hit 78c, which seems really high for stock.

I did watch JJ from asus in the z87 overclocking guide, and I only changed the settings he mentioned. Should I remount my h100i pump and reapply the arctic silver 5? What do I need to change to be able to run 4.5 on prime95? I have seen post where people say they can get up to 4.7 using more that 1.300v and they only hit 80c.

Why are my temps so dang high? I mainly play BF4, and in game (4.5 and 1.285v) I hit 70c.

I would really appreciate your help. I understand that I didn't get a "golden" chip, but at least I am able to be stable at 4.5. Temps are my only problems.

If your goal is to be stable in games it looks like you have achieved it. If you want to play P95, you may need to delid to run 4.5.

Your chip seems pretty good. I need 1.326 to get a stable 44X under the newer version of prime, which runs hotter. I'd consider delidding. I'm thinking about doing it myself. Heat just comes with the territory with these chips. But if you're around 70c gaming and you're happy at 4.5 I wouldn't worry about it.

make sure you set the voltage to manual. just double check it i know you said you read the guide.

yea you might need to delid that thing. prime 95 is notorious for making chips run too hot. its synthetic and therefore creates a lot more heat than normal applications.

I currently RMA'd my H100i, because the led, and one fan connector wouldn't turn on. I just sent it in today, so hopefully when I get it back, it does better with the heat. And yes, I do run manual when I stress test. Then I will put it on adaptive at the same voltage, using the (-) minus offset while gaming. As far as delidding goes, that's out of the question, this is my first ever build, and I just bought the thing in February.

at 4.5, I will occasionally hit the 70c mark while gaming. As I said, I currently RMA'd my h100i, so hopefully the new unit (if they give me a new unit) will give much better temps. I've seen some people at 4.5 using 1.3v and they never hit 75c+ in prime 95.

Sometimes I feel like I'm doing something wrong as I can't get "good temps" like everyone else.

SORRY FOR BAD SPELLING.

That's what I was thing too. How can someone have the same exact settings as me, but get like 20c less in prime95 or any stress test, using an h100i. However, I did reapply and remount the pump, but the temps didn't change. Yesterday, I RMA'd my h100i because of LED problems, and the left fan controller wasn't working. So hopefully they send me a new unit, which should give me better temps. I hope.

Ambient temps can make a difference as well, with the exact same hardware & settings someone overclocking in Alaska can have nicer looking temps than someone in Arizona.

yes ofcourse but 20 degrees i dont think so, i think with good stable settings and a new h100i he will never hit that temps he has now.

I completely understand how temps in a hotter and cooler play WILL be different, but 20c different. That's just doesn't even seem possible IMHO
