Increased voltage vs increased power target/limit vs both... Which holds a GPU more stable when overclocking?

Just wondering what people think (in their experience) holds more of a stable OC?

Increased voltage?
Increased Power Target/Limit?
Or both?

I know the obvious answer probably is both. There's still got to be pros and cons each way though.

Increasing the power limit just allows the card to pull more wattage if the system requires it.
Increasing the voltage will stabilize the actual GPU if you are overclocking.
Increasing both will just ensure your new overclock does not get throttled as the card will most likely pull more power.

Then how is it at the same voltage (just with the power limit set at five rather than zero) made an unstable clock now stable?

Because the card was exceeding it's software governed power limit, therefore the card reduced the voltage whilst maintaining the full clock speeds.

Nah, don't think so. I'll just increase voltage and power limit bit by bit until I max out what I can OC the card too.

Was dreading that my cards max OC was around 1150/1500 to begin with (in gaming, that is, benches I could clock a fair bit higher).

Now it looks like i should be able to squeeze a bit more out of it in games. smile.gif

It's funny though. I did originally have the power limit set to 20 when I started OC'ing and it seemed to make no difference in stability.

That's why I was a tad confused about what each (voltage and power limit) actually did when OC'ing.

Most people max out their power limit so the card never becomes "power draw bottlenecked" when overclocking the GPU. If you ever see instability from increasing the power draw despite having a stable tested overclock, that means you are exceeding another limit, either on the Motherboard or PSU. Just something to keep in mind.
