Having issues with Asus RMA. Any advise?

Hey!

so I have this: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2lKXq which I built last November. About 8 weeks ago, the board went bad. I have no post issues, random boot device lights, GPU lights, the thing will freeze at idle in windows when it does boot, for some reason it will only use two of the CPU cores when it's running it idle. If I stress the system, it will be fine. It's kind of odd. Anyway, I tested all the other components, reset the CMOS, checked the BIOS software was up to date. Everything else works. So I contact Asus for RMA of the board.

I ship the board to them, and this is where the problems really started. According to them the "repaired" the board, I received it back from them in about seven days. I sent it back to them in all it's original packaging, including anti static bag, all the manuals, etc. They returned it to me in an unmarked box, no instruction manuals, poorly packed. I thought, OK, I can live with that as long as it works. It doesn't work. I have the same issues with it as before, I call them and they tell me to reset the CMOS and update the software again (it now has older software in it than I sent it to them with). If that doesn't work, It's got to go back. GRRRR. While I'm on the phone with them, I ask them what they repaired, what was diagnosed as the failure. They won't tell me...

Anyone else been through this with Asus? What's the likely hood of them authorizing a straight cross ship of a new unit if the flash doesn't fix it? Sorry for the giant wall of text, but I am slightly frustrated with this. mad.gif

Thanks,

Barrel

Sounds like the person on the phone doesnt have access to repair info. Or their repair technicians dont log detailed reports.

That doesnt sound bad, relatively.

The return instructions you got from Asus said not to return anything but the board.
The guy you talked to saw the same thing you saw when you logged in to see the status of your RMA, that's all.
I would assume that the board was functional when it left Asus and that the problem rests elsewhere.

We tried the other components on another board, just swapped them over wholesale, everything worked. The rep I spoke to on the phone last night told me the board was bad also, after I had been through all the other steps she walked me through. She then told me to reflash the BIOS. I'm going to do that tonight. It also had an inoperative SATA plug, and the two rear USB ports near the center of the I/O shield had quit before I sent it. Also, The mech hard drive would show up in windows but not in the BIOS screen. I noted these issues too before I sent it to them the first time. They are still inop, I still have the invisible HD problem. I did kinda just glance at the return instructions before I packed it up. So my bad on that. That's no biggie, really.

The turn around time was great, actually. I was pretty happy with that.

Seriously, good luck.....
You could try leaving a note taped to the board delineating all the issues. That way you'd be more sure that what you told the rep actually gets to the repair tech and avoid the "Yep, it boots, send it back" issue.

The turnaround time from AMD is even faster and they pay shipping and packaging both ways...what a deal!

I might send the CPU off while I'm at it too, lol. I did the whole note thing, I sent them an email with a description when I set up the RMA, printed that out and put it in the bag with the mobo. I'll see what happens tonight, but I'm tempted to just go buy a Gigabyte / MSI / Asrock one and smash this with a hammer...thumb.gif

Updated BIOS. Board is still the same. posted and booted into windows and ran for about 10 minutes before it locked me out. Now will not post at all unless I reset the CMOS before each boot. That's a pain because the GPU has to come out (ASUS put the CMOS battery right next to the top lane).

Contacted Asus again. Asked for the cross ship that they promised me if this didn't work. They basically told me they would think about it and get back to me tomorrow.

They've got until lunch time. Then I get grumpy.

Want problems? Try doing that with dual water cooled GPUs!

On my last three motherboards I added a switch on the bios battery.

That's a good idea. I feel your pain. I'm scared every time I have to take out the GPU, lol. I'll probably snap the end off the PCB at some point. I have a serious case of hot dog fingers.

Use about a 3/4" by 1/8" thick by about 8" long wooden stick to release the video card catch.
