Following a string of sales from prime properties to its Vaio personal computer brand, Sony is now letting go of its entire stake in Japanese videogame publisher Square Enix Holdings.
Not a surprise. the only reason they're able to stay afloat with medicore title after medicore title is between having a huge backer like Sony and fans wanting them to succeed.
If they were to really fail, I couldn't say I'd miss them much if the last 5 FF games are an idication of their potential.
I wonder how much say Sony even had over Square Enix operations. It will be interesting if we start seing changes out of them.
I wonder if SOE is on the sale block too?

The final fantasy series just needs to die with whatever bit of honor it has left. Though if you look at other games Square Enix has made it is a different story. Just Cause 2 is one of my favorite games to this day for example.
About time. They have been producing crap for years. They just need to go back to making JRPGs or re-making the ones that fans have been screaming for forever (Chrono Trigger, FF7, Vagrant Story (Just me screaming for that one))

hell no. I've been screaming for a Vagrant Story 2 since finishing it the first time. Ashley walking off in the dark with...a certain something on his person...it was just screaming to be continued.
their budgets are ridiculous for games that don't have a high chance of massive sales, hitman absolution, tomb raider, they sold very well but cost so much.
They could make a couple retro 16bit style final fantasy games of very high quality and get a huge profit, its not rocket science.
they should make a list of fan requests like ff7 remake, new chrono trigger game or remake, etc.. put them all on a voting system, have the fans vote, and whatever the fans decide, thats what they do, boom-done. and you'd get all sorts of positive press.

There is nothing wrong with making more final fantasy games. Its not a series in the same way that Assassins Creed, halo or even Elders scroll is. Every one (excluding the X-2 and XIII-2 ect) are stand alone games that don't carry much over form the earlier instalments.
That said they should seriously re-evaluate the way they make the games. Most attempts to "modernize" the series have only served to make the games worse. There hasn't been a decent FF game since FF X and even that was a bit meh.
More then anything they need to get back to the roots of how an FF games is supposed to be. Great story, turn based combat, open world map ect.
More then anything it would be nice if Square would start making more multi plat games. There is so few good JRPG on PC it would be nice to see them make a good FF and put in on PC.
Wonder if Square enix goes out of business/shrink considerably, would Activision cut ties with them and move the COD servers somewhere else from japan?

They've shown they can make a good game...just not when it has final fantasy in the title. Though I've heard that FF14: A Realm Reborn is actually pretty good since the revamp, but I've never played it. I think they should just retire the series and focus on the games they can do well that people like.
Countless Squaresoft games from the 90's deserved sequels. Judging by the way classic games have been "re-invented" lately, I think I'm glad they waited. They may not have had the best influence for staying true to their roots.
I had a hard time finding a Squre game on the PS1 that I couldn't enjoy. That's for true. They really went overboard with the new ideas and concepts these days. Refining some of their greatest work would be the best direction, if you ask me.
This makes sense. Sony is spread out too thin and needs to make some serious cuts before they can even think about regaining focus and perhaps even grow once more. I can't really think of any products aside from their Playstation console that isn't beat by another more specialized company. I wonder who they sold the shares to? Nintendo? Hahahaha
Final Fantasy XII was a great game and Final Fantasy XIV: ARR has been doing amazingly well. It just hit 2 million subscribers with a subscription model.
This article has nothing to do with Sony selling off it's stake in Final Fantasy because it is bad, and more to do with Sony needing a quick influx of money.

Some of you may not know this but electronics and video game industry is not even main source of income for them. Their core business is financial services and life insurances.

All the servers are really in Japan? I find that hard to believe. usually they at least localize to the same continent and CoD has enough sales they should be able to afford servers all over the place. I've never even played a CoD game since CoD2 though...so I don't know first hand.

Sony is selling 8.25% of their stake in Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest; they are not severing all ties..... people don't read the article.

Not everything was crap. KH and KHII were fantastic games, Way better than FF XII or XIII. To me X was the last good final fantasy besides crisis core.
All i ever wanted was the classic snes and ps1 remakes, how hard was that!... but they didn't listen. this is what happens to companies when they don't listen to their core market.

Yup. Insurance is #1 for them ($9 billion in 10 years). Movies and Music is #2 ($7 billion in 10 years). Their electronics division has LOST $8.5 billion over 10 years.
