Seriously, 99% of this thread is talking about the series and not the article itself. I wouldn't mind seeing more information on Sony's current status and why they're in the position they're in (I don't follow any of the markets Sony is a part of so I'm a bit in the dark about most of it).

Over the last 10 years they've lost about 8 billion dollars and are reporting a loss of 1.1 billion for the last year. From what I gather they are dumping assets left and right to close the gap and restructure the company.

They just releasedthe xperia Z2 which is, in my opinion, the best phone out there. Also, they have the xperia zl for a cheaper option. They will probably release the zl 2 in a few months. They also upgrade their firmwares, unlike samsung...

Maybe...just maybe...this will mean good things for the FF franchise. SE might have go back to making good games now that they don't have Sony as their sugar-daddy anymore.

Vehemently disagree.

FFXIV 2.0 -> Is actually one of the top rated MMO's to date.

The 7 remake is already 1/2 way through completion and from what I understand a 7-2 is on the block as well.

FF7 when you scale it to the modern day economy...Outsells the Halo Series COMBINED. - That says a lot.

Remake that game well + a sequel? SE won't need Sony...Ever again.

Yeah, I've been hearing good things about the revamp of FF14. I've actually been thinking about trying it. So maybe they've turned over a new forest of leaves. Though even in the shadows of FF10 and FF12, FF11 was a pretty good MMO too...so I don't know if the MMOs should be counted. Though the first go round of FF14 was...horrid.

And maybe going back to their roots and working with FF7 again will spur them back in the right direction, but where did you hear about a FF7-2? I could careless about a FF7 remake. I've probably played the game through a couple hundred times. A new game based on the same characters in the same world perks my interest though, but I can't find any mention of it.

However, if they continue the same trend that we have seen from FF10, FF12, and FF13...I don't have much care to see a FF15. Really, I thought it started going down hill with FF9...though it is a still a game I can respect even if I don't like it. I just didn't like how they made the characters look and act like children. In all the other games we at least got characters acting like young teenagers.

Sony was one of the reasons for their direction following FFIX...

I've played FFVII for a few thousand hours...I do most of the challenges...Love the game.

FFVII-2 would come after a relaunch as I understand it...My Japanese is a bit poor but during a Q/A for FFXIV recently, their producer let the ball drop on a slip of the tongue. - It was a slip that wasn't translated into English for us peons but, it is //on the table//.

An FFVII remake in HD would be amazing...Let's be honest. To replay a childhood game, in modern graphics? Arguably the best RPG ever, with a skin-lift would assuredly attract an entirely new generation to the game as well as the rest of us "loyalists". It's a money-maker in and of, itself.

I also love FFX - Minus one or two of the mini games...I do feel that FFX in an open world setting like VII/VIII would've been absolutely incredible but, we can't all have nice things.

FFXII, agreed and the same with FFXIII...Also agree about FFXV...But, without Sony, the series will revert to what it once was.

Most of the people in this thread say "Good riddance, end with honor, bla bla bla" when in fact it was Sony who took them this direction, to begin with.

I think we'll see some really GOOD things come of SE down the line...Especially if the remake is as good as we anticipate.

That's the thing with this though, Sony only owned a controlling share for like 2 years from 2001 until 2003. This was just long enough to keep Microsoft from getting Square titles and secure them for the PS2. After Square merged with Enix in 2003 that all became moot.

Square always had complete creative control on its projects while Sony was there to make sure they weren't sleeping in MS bed. At least until XI came to 360 since by that time Sony didn't have enough say after the merger.

What you can expect from this is that Square will continue as they have been since Sony hasn't really had any control since 2003.

I largely disagree with the control aspect and your timeline, it's incorrect.

Sony maintained controlling stock from 2001 -> Present. By controlling, 20ish real %.

Not only were they one of the largest shareholders in the merger -> present day but, SE's stock has risen considerably since the "capital injection" so, they're actually make a @50 million dollar profit.

FF X was the last game in production from Square and Square, alone. Which, we could actually have a solid argument about X because. SE/Sony's ideals were really pushed into the project during final development...AND the game's development was rushed BECAUSE of the stockholders.

Sony even helped produce and launch Spirits Within...Which, we all know was a flop...All-be-it, a very well designed, gorgeous, plot-less flop. A flop is a flop is a flop.

Moving forward, they did have a tremendous amount of impact in FFXI, FFXII, FFXIII and FFXIV.

It's interesting to note that Sony had the MOST hands on with FFXIV v1.0 which, was a catastrophic failure...FFXIV v2.0 was an incredible success and made the game one of the top rated MMO's of all time. What changed? Sony's input...

So I say again, this is an incredibly good thing and good riddance to Sony.

Not only will they NOT be missed but, they're unnecessary for the future of Final Fantasy.

If a remake DOES in fact grace our shelves, it will be one of the best selling games of all time -- Guaranteed.

Sony never had any 'control' they where share holders and publishers in specific countries... Final Fantasy games since VII tend to do the best on Sony consoles.

FFXII went back to being Sony only after XI's trip to MS consoles. XIII was back to MS consoles but even then it sold over twice as much on the PS3 (salty as heck Squienix gimped XIII-2 to appease X360 fans.... even thought the games was crap lol).
