[WSJ] ‘Final Fantasy’ Comes to an End for Sony - Page 12

Thread Starter

While they were the 3rd largest shareholder, I don't think that they had enough control to unilaterally dictate actions the company took after the merger in 2003 when they went from owning 19% of Square Co. to owning 8.25% of the newly formed Square Enix Co.

Interestingly, the largest shareholder is Yasuhiro Fukushima, founder of Enix.

  Current
1 Yasuhiro Fukushima 23,626 20.47
2 Fukushima Planning Co., Ltd. 9,763 8.46

6 Royal Bank of Canada Trust Company (Cayman) Limited 5,039 4.36
7 The Master Trust Bank of Japan, Ltd. (Trust Account) 3,339 2.89
8 Japan Trustee Services Bank, Ltd. (Trust Account) 2,998 2.59
9 S System Co., Ltd. 2,045 1.77

FFXII went back to being Sony only after XI's trip to MS consoles. XIII was back to MS consoles but even then it sold over twice as much on the PS3 (salty as heck Squienix gimped XIII-2 to appease X360 fans.... even thought the games was crap lol).

XI was actually not on Xbox 360 until after XII was already out. Also, controlling share typically means they had the most votes for company direction at shareholder meetings. Not that they literally had reigns of the company and what they developed but in most cases companies will continue to listen to their controlling shareholders otherwise they may lose their investment partners.

To add, this is similar to Nintendo's relationship with Rare in the 90s. They only owned about 50% of the company through shares until MS bought out 100% in early 2000s but they owned enough that they could dictate company direction at shareholder meetings and potentially have seats on the board. It's not unusual for a publisher or console maker to only buy a part stake in a company to grab exclusivity for a while.

This was basically the only reason Sony ever bought that 19% share in Squaresoft. The merger kinda messed up that plan longterm due to the drop in shares.

Sony had control enough over Square Enix to control the platform of most of the games for a long time. For quite awhile most of Squaresoft or Square Enix games were only on Sony products. I highly doubt Square Enix did that willingly or if they did they were paid and pressured to. Sony some how tends have more power over things they really should. Take Blueray for example. What Sony says is usually turned into standards, but in reality there should be a lot of other companies weighing in on the same decision. I don't really know how it ends up the way it does. Doesn't make a lot of sense. But even when the Wii was selling like hot cakes they didn't jump in right away.

So I guess we will need to wait and see...

...and Masked, happen to know which Q&A? I am pretty good at Japanese...or Korean if they got a hold of it.

I think I remember a slip of the tongue mentioned on an interview with the Final Fantasy director about Lightning Returns and he was asked if Lightning will return again...he said that that Lightning Returns is not the last chapter planned for final fantasy and that we may see lightning other characters from Final Fantasy's past again in new games. And they finished off with something about what they were working on, but didn't go into much detail. Just that it was in the design phase and they didn't even know what platforms it would end up on, but said something about how fans would be too excited if they found out too much information and that it was meeting a lot of internal resistance. Though every journalist took it to be FF15.

If I get time I will try to dig it up...this interview was from a couple months ago though.

Um... Sony is doing this due to it's own internal re-structuring to help improve profitability? It has nothing to do with the FF series?

What a sensationalized title.

FF7 when you scale it to the modern day economy...Outsells the Halo Series COMBINED. - That says a lot.

Remake that game well + a sequel? SE won't need Sony...Ever again.

Hahahaha, right, a FF VII remake and a sequel? We wish.

FF VII isn't my favorite of the series, and I dislike much of it, but it is still a defining game and worthy of a remake, I just don't see it happening.

I'll see if I can find it again...I don't speak Japanese but, during the livecast people went CRAZY and were typing it in the twitch feed.

Unfortunately, I can't get a hold of the feed but, I'll see if someone was recording and caught the commotion.

Again, I don't speak Japanese, understand a little but, I'm at the mercy of the few thousand people that instantly lost their crap in the channel.

It was SPAM about OMG OMG OMG FF7 Remake?!?! FF7-2!?!?!?! OMG OMG OMG

I'll do some digging this evening.

Well, yes and no...

They make a straight profit...Don't like the direction SE is now going (back to their roots) and Sony tends to be vindictive so, it's really a few things slammed into one. thumb.gif

Whoa, I didn't know Yasuhiro Fukushima was the largest shareholder.

It would be great If they do really execute on going back to their roots like you guys are saying though.

Great info.

So... with all the talk of different final fantasy games and which is best or better or whatever... I decided to give XII a full play through. Ripped my copy and have it loaded in pcsx2 and quite happy with the way graphics look... Character models look pretty darned good, text and other elements are a bit poor though. Anyone have any decent setting suggestions? I've not done much for it outside scaling / AA and most of my Google-Fu seems to bring up random junk that has little more than what I've already done.

Or is this about as clear as it gets?

Yup that's about as good as its going to get. Its an PS2 game after all. Honestly if you can run it like that without graphics glitches or slow downs you should count your self lucky.

As for the game it self. I never finished XII despite trying many times. I just could not get in to it. The combat system, uninteresting main characters, annoying level design, the god awful English dub, its just not good.

Yeah it does look quite nice for being a PS2 game.

I never did either, for much the same reasons you listed funny enough. That's the main reason I'm going to give it another go though, but I'm already remembering how much I hate the combat system, lol.
