"Mature" game - what does it mean?

I wanted to take some time to ask what "Mature" rated games really mean. You see it on game packaging, game sites, and game trailers warning that its supposed to be mature.

But, all I see is mature rated games which tend to be very immature. Overly excessive swearing, excessive killing, and other various inappropriate activities making their way into games add nothing to the game experience, making them more immature than anything. Seems "mature" is about killing people or getting a quick glance at a naked lady.

Allot of games I'v played have weird adult scenes, excessive violence, or sexual themes and if my own mother were to come over to my place and see me playing that, there would be allot of awkward explaining trying to make it not seem like I'm sort of freak for playing that game. For example look at Thief and the awkward prostitution mission or Grand theft auto "hot coffee". It's just awkward and doesn't add to the game at all.

Possibly the only "M" game that I would consider mature that contained all of the content mentioned in ESRB listing would be L.A Noire.

Content Descriptors: Blood and Gore, Nudity, Sexual Themes, Strong Language, Use of Drugs, Violence
All of the drugs, nudity, and language were incorporated in a way that added to the overall game and were executed in a mature way.

I have noticed that the more mature I have become over the years (I'm 35 years old in 9 days), the more in control I am of myself. In this context, it means that I am much less affected by content like that, it means that I'm not as "impressionable" as I once was. It means that I can handle content like that without it having an impact on me. Content like that requires a certain level of maturity to handle it without being affected by it.

That's not really what I was trying to get at, I'm not affected by them either after being used to games having this sort of content for years. I'm trying to get at the fact it just seems that games now days are following a trend of trying to throw in anything they can to try and make their game seem more adult like. I like GTA since GTA3 came out on ps2, but it just seems they have gone more and more immature in their ways of implementing their adult content, or adding adult content where it wasn't beneficial to the game in any way. Just adding it for the sake of adding it.

CoD is rated mature for crying out loud. According to ESRB, mature just means it has some blood and swearing, and perhaps nudity.

Think of mature rating as like a rated R movie, no one under 17 should be playing it

The more "Mature" a game gets, the more immature it really ends up. X_x Like GTA, and a few other games, as pointed out.
Yeah seems like Mature means that it is recommended for matured players (not impressionable children), even though the content may be very immature.

I don't know how to respond to this. I mean, you can't make the rating mean something that it doesn't. The "Mature" rating just means that the content is for people who are no longer impressionable. The older we get, the less impressionable we are. Therefore, content that is rated "M for Mature" is similar to the "R" rating of movies. For example: I'm 35 years old. These days, when I am exposed to such content, it doesn't cause me to emulate it for the next several hours or days or weeks or whatever. No. I just get entertained and that's it. As soon as I'm done watching it or playing the video game, I'm still ME. 20 years ago? LOL Yeah, I was quite impressionable. Why? Because I was nowhere near as mature as I am now - but that doesn't mean that I don't act immature. The kind of maturity that "M for Mature" talks about is the kind of maturity that comes naturally with age - the kind of maturity that no one can avoid. Yes, there are fully-matured adults who are in their 30s and older who still seem very immature, but that doesn't mean that they are still impressionable!

It's not that I don't get what you're saying because I really do, but the way you're asking is like....  I dunno. You're trying to make the "Mature" rating mean something entirely different. I mean, you're taking the "Mature" rating to mean that the CONTENT is mature. No. No, no, no, no, no, no. It's a rating that tells the buyer (such as a PARENT!) who the intended audience is. Granted, if you are the one buying it, then OBVIOUSLY YOU'RE NOT GOING TO CARE. lol It's like how some kids like to sneak their way into R-rated movies. They don't give a crap that they're still too impressionable to be exposed to that kind of stuff. However, good parents DO care.

Obviously, if you are aware that the content itself is immature, then you're probably mature enough to play that game or watch that movie. Fortunately, as a mature adult, you have full control over what you expose yourself to. That is something else that comes with maturity.
