In my specific case, and a huge amount of people that can relate, I have horrible vision. Now, use my stem cells, clone my eyes with some gene therapy to correct the vision problems I have, replace them... bam! Eye surgery my butt... eye replacement! This goes hand-in-hand with the smart lenses being developed out there as well.

Misuse is going to happen no matter what, whether by governments or the underground. It can't be stopped, and if it can't be developed in a controlled environment, you can bet that it will be developed in an uncontrolled (underground) environment. Anyone watching Almost Human?

This would be a huge plus for people with autoimmune diseases, repairing of joints, eyes, etc.

Right, that's exactly what I was getting at. Policy never stopped anyone who really wants to do anything bad. What it CAN do it prevent mass-scale misuse by everyone for fear of punishment. The 'underground' in all its forms will continue to do what it wants, but the general public could really use all of this.

The problem is the popular position that the two are mutually exclusive. Both run wild without some sort of balancing aspect.

This is awesome! This century will have the biggest advancements in biology for sure and I can't wait to have the choice to live forever.

Well all a person's soul is, is their personality. So once we have figure out how to decode the brain we will be able to clone body and mind/personality. Replicating experiences or planting memories should not be that hard with time. I say by 2035.

I think discussion of what the 'soul' is should probably end right there, as it is impossible to leave out religious discussion and heated argument.

Personality can be fundamentally altered, even permanently, with psychotropic drugs. I think memory implantation and personality treatments would be what's necessary to as close as possible replicate a whole person. Though that does not mean they're actually the same. Two clones of the same person will likely produce three distinct reactions to a given situation.

Anyways, right now we're more concerned with made-to-order body parts and organ replacements.

All I am saying is what makes you who you are is for a fact your life experiences. Hence why Alzheimers robs the person of life. They cease to remember what made them who they are. Another example is brain damage. Especially damage to the frontal lobe area. Depending on how badly the damage is people lose what we call morals as the frontal lobe controls anger and impulse control mostly. So these people that where fine with morals, now all the sudden, when they have sexual impulse's will try and rape their children or whoever is closet because they have lost the ability to control themselves.

It maybe impossible for some to do as you describe but not if you are talking pure science. It is fact that morals and personality come from, for the most part, life experiences and even genetics. It is fact when the brain is damaged it can completely change someone and they can lose their morals and personality in it's entirety. Soul = personality/morals. I can talk about that all day long without religion and anyone else should be.

Edit- to add I would say if my complete memory and life experiences were uploaded into another brain I would be the same person. The only difference that would produce different outcomes would be the fact that as soon as there is two the life experience/memory would be different from then on. Plus mood would alter decisions drastically as is does with anyone.

I agree made to order parts/organs is a big concern but we would be able to do that without this specific breakthrough anyways.

True clones, as in memories and everything, will never happen IMO. At the very most, we might be able to move over a memory in a fractured sort of way, but that's it. We can map the brain all day long and it place everything in the same spots, it will NEVER be the same.

Personality is gained from years of life, environment, social immersion, family, etc. You can't clone that no matter how hard you try. NOW, what we should really be talking about I like to call more along the lines of Twinning; the same, yet distinct.
