The Xbox and PS2 were definitively awesome hardware when they first launched, though
.
No, that is not why...AMD was just the lowest bidder and their CPU/GPU integration likely sealed the deal. As far as "libraries", AMD probably didn't have much to do with the firmware on the Xbox One and PS4. I haven't heard much detail on this from the MS side, but yeah...they are making a big deal about DX12 on the console so I think that answers that...the PS4 has released a fair amount of info on their firmware/API and none of it sounds like AMD had much to do with the creation of it. No more so than any hardware provider...think along the lines of what Foxconn provides for Apple which isn't much.
Ok try this because you missed the point by a country mile:

The one bright spot for AMD is the Playstation 4 and Xbox One design wins, which has catapulted the company from a sea of red ink to profitability. While these design wins were largely driven by the graphics group, it is clear that Jaguar was developed so that AMD could offer a complete SoC solution, designing out the earlier generation of IBM processors.

One of the interesting side-effects of AMD’s success with Jaguar for consoles is the future trajectory of the core. Normally, an x86 microarchitecture stays relevant for 2-3 years before it is obsoleted by derivatives – but there are reasons to believe this will not be the case for Jaguar. Since all the high-performance consoles will rely on Jaguar, game developers will inevitably optimize their code to extract the maximum performance. The lifetime of these consoles is roughly 5-7 years, which means that game developers will be producing code optimized for Jaguar for the better part of the next decade. This gives AMD tremendous incentive to keep on shrinking and optimizing the Jaguar core, with minor revisions. In theory, this means that Jaguar derivatives should eventually break the 1W barrier and become suitable for extremely low power applications, but only time will tell.

What would you rather have? The performance you can get now, or the performance you might get in the future?

SA's forum goers linked to an article (full article only for registered members) that stated AMD is already shipping graphics from Global Foundry.

I'd imagine it's 290 and 290Xs. Perhaps we will see them drop down to their MSRPs flat in the coming weeks. It'd be nice if they dropped even lower, but that's just wishful thinking

OK... First, what does any of the bolded part have to do with Nvidia and Intel turning down or not winning the bid to make the CPU/GPU for the consoles? It is just a side effect of what happened. If Intel had won the bid on the PS4 then it wouldn't not have happened. The current situation is actually a bad thing from the perspective of Sony and Microsoft. Since if any techniques are learned to squeeze out more performance from one console's CPU/GPU...chances are it will work on the other console making it harder for one side to gain on the other. AMD gave them offer they really could not refuse...simple as that.

Second, what does that bolded part have to do with "libraries". Do you know what a "library" is? It can refer to any stored function that can be called upon by other code. So even if they are optimizing for the Jaguar architecture...it will be done with different APIs. MS has it's own API, Sony has it's own API, and Nintendo has its own API, and PCs all have their own APIs and each API has different libraries. With the exception of Mantle that exists only on select PCs...AMD had close to nothing to do with any of them. And these same libraries would have been made for whatever hardware they ended up putting in their consoles. So this aspect could not have had any bearing on the decision to go with AMD.

and third...I am quite sure Jaguar will never be a 1 watt CPU. Well, it could I suppose...but you aren't going to be gaming on it. Unless the author was referring to some possibility 10 or 20 years in the future or something. And I don't understand why just because Jaguar is used in consoles means it is destined for the 1 watt arena. There are other CPUs that are more heavily used and by the time Jaguar could develop into some miracle 1 watt CPU that could still run a gaming console, and not just a blender or something, there will be high performance 1 watt CPUs all over the place. If they were just talking about a 1 watt jaguar period...that could probably be done right now, but it would run at like 200Mhz or so. We've had some 1 watt CPUs around for a few years. They aren't good for much though. I think the author was just wearing AMD colored glasses.

Well with all the nap nap here and nap nap there, i must say off all my systems in the house i'f got, the APU (Llano) build of my wife i have the less troubles! So AMD must just keep on going making excellent APU's and they will have a bright future! thumb.gif

Interesting. I wonder how they'll clock, since GloFo is using FD-SOI, but their process is less mature than TSMC's and... well... we all know GF's track record...

If they actually start producing Hawaiis there using FD-SOI perhaps we'll see AMD become more competitive against GK110 for overclockers.

I guess you need to be spoon fed, huh. Point was the console win for AMD was more about getting software love for their architecture than any profit. And libraries can have a significant impact on performance depending on particular architectures of the hardware. AVX is a good example of this.
