First Computer Build Memory Problem

Thread Starter
Hey guys thanks for stopping by to help me out! I have very little experience with building computers but decided to take the plunge and build my first gaming rig. When building it I went with a Samsung EVO 840 SSD 250GB, and quickly filled it up with OS, games, and other junk that comes along with nerdin out. A month or so after the build was complete I bought a Seagate 3TB HDD, just more so for mass storage of pictures, music, and other software. I guess my real question here is am I able to move all the info from my SSD to my HDD except for my OS and games that I play regularly, and also have it be the default location for all storage needs? Im not even sure if all this is possible or not just looking to see what other solutions could be out there for my storage dilemma. Thanks in advance guys!!! thumb.gif

You can move data, but not programs.
For example, you could move Microsoft Word documents, but not Microsoft word itself.

So really no way to move my documents or program files to the other hard drive, unless I totally uninstall every thing and re install the OS on the bigger HDD?

When a program "installs" it makes changes to the registry. Often those registry entries point to files in specific folders. If you move the folder or its contents the program won't run.

As i said before, documents can be moved. The My Documents folder can be relocated, but there are specific registry changes that have to be made to make that workable.

I think most games and apps will be fine if you move them to a second hdd. For instance, I copied and pasted gw2, unigine benchmarks, and futuremark benchmarks (edit: and SWTOR and Crysis 2) to my secondary hdd and just changed the .exe location in the shortcut and they worked fine. You can also use Steam Mover to move already installed Steam games to a secondary hard drive. In fact, most of my steam games I've moved using this program because I'll install them on my SSD initially, because I'll be playing them a lot, then I'll move them over when I still want to play them but not quite often enough to warrant the space on the SSD. It moves Origin games too, which is a life saver considering Origin doesn't allow you to install games on a secondary hard drive natively. Hope this helps thumb.gif
