Worth the upgrade?

*sigh*

I just recently upgraded my 660s to a 780 classified, but now the red team is sorely tempting me with all these cheap used 290s and 290x's. Would it be worth it to sell the 780 and grab two 290s? I enjoy PhysX in BL2/PS2 but it is something I can live without if it means a massive performance boost. The classy is great and I would love to have two but lets be honest, I don't see a 780 (let alone a classy) hitting $350 any time soon.

If yes, my biggest questions would be:

1. What is the state of AMD drivers? My last AMD card was a 5850 and I wasn't particularly impressed by catalyst.
2. How bad are they in terms of heat? Which coolers would be the best? I'm using a GA-Z77-UD4H so I have a space between the cards thankfully.
3. Which AMD manufacturers have transferable warranties? Which have decent customer service? I'm not expecting EVGA-levels of awesome but it would be good to know who to avoid.
4. I'm currently using a Corsair HX750 power supply. Would this require an immediate upgrade or could it survive with stock clocks?

hello,

you asking what kinda of quality from a 780 to the new...........I'd say not much.......with mantle released, it pushed some specs up with all amd...

I thought real hard about upgrading this year....but I kinda bet, I pull almost the same.....
you prob push ten more frames then me......unclocked....

it really depends on how far ya wanna go, and how much money ya can blow......me? ya I push it.....but when I show ppl......they could give a ratz ass......to them...it don't look any better then a ps4....so....only you can care at that point...

if you have a 780.....work with it......
I bet it can pull more then you give credit for.......
blah blah blah.....
worth even 10 more frame rates? no

I would say that the upgrade itch has hit you!

Haha give it time and it will pass! A 780 is a really good card and I wish I had one! Haha

If you're happy with what you have, and only using one monitor, then what you have is really good!

A second 780 would be a better investment In my opinion.

R9 290 are cheap, some going for 200-250 used on Ebay and forums.Newwegg. R9 290/x non- reference cards back to MRSP like Sapphire Tri-x.

I sold off my 780Ti SLI to run R9 290 Crossfire and could not be happier..

1.AMD drivers for me have been great and latest driver even better.I do not even open CCC and there is a program called RadeonPro BETA (Automating 3D Settings author has gone to work for AMD raptr/gaming involved but will update programe when needed)) which is similar to Nvidia inspector if your into tweaking cards.

2..I am running Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 and XFX r9 290 Reference card in crossfire and can tell you they are sweet, run great and cool and quite IMO for me.

Small overclock and Crysis 3 run and this is what GPU-Z was reporting so not to bad for crossfire with a little overclock.

R9 290 crossfire can even run this game pretty good.
MAX setting with SMAA MGPU 2X

3.Customer service for warranties depends. All have good/bad experiences for different people. Some companies go by manufacturing date(msi),some transferable, some not .You would have to check card by card I guess.

4. 750W on stocks clocks, sure I bet you could run on that PSU for a bit.

So that's one for, one against, and one maybe. Even if I stick with my current setup I would like to hear what people think about #3. I know very little about the quality of manufacturers beyond "EVGA for Nvidia." Most discussions I have found so far on the topic are from 3-4 years ago.

How is customer support/RMA for MSI, XFX, Gigabyte, and Sapphire? I know ASUS tends to be a nightmare with RMAs.

I hear XFX is horrible so yeahhh

the thing is do you really want to upgrade?

if you can sell off you 780 and get a pair of 290s for a competitive price than I would say it is worth it...

Also it depends on the games that you play, you are already playing a physx game so you are already reaping the benefits of an Nvidia card.

In the end you may be splitting hairs here, because if you dont even have a monitor that can refresh that fast, then fps past the refresh rate of the monitor is moot.

I would say go buy yourself a nice 1440p monitor and push your 780!
