I just wondering, for pure gaming rig which one is better? For example i7 950/975/980x vs FX-8320/8350/9590

Westmere-EP

Otherwise it comes down to what game your looking at probably, IPC is pretty similar from what I understand.

Probably depends on the game really, but If this is going to be a new build, why would you pick a platform that has been dead for years? (1366)

It's because I could get a good deal on one. Perhaps going from one dead platform to another isn't going to go anywhere redface.gif

A Six Core Xeon on a decent 1366 board OCed to 4ghz+ will be better then anything AMD has to offer.

1366 has good expandability if you get the right board.

Friends i7 920 OC to 4.2ghz and SLI 760s keep up with my 3770K and 1 GTX 780 and he can add a 3rd card and I can only go 2 way.

Westmere-EP clocks around 4.6Ghz to 5.2Ghz as well

1366 is still plenty viable in todays market

If it was a hell of a deal I wouldn't be shy about picking up 1366 if I were in need of a system.

i7-970@4ghz has almost the exact same performance as a 4 module PD chip @ 5ghz in all sorts of workloads.

Both platforms are novelty/legacy status at this point.
Both platforms go over 200W at the chip when overclocked hard.
Both platforms are "enthusiast" class in terms of tinkering and features.

The Bulldozer architecture was originally slated to be released at a time when it would have been competing with Nahalem, which explains why it's performance seems so "3-5 years ago."

The title of this thread incorrectly calls for the comparison to be made to AM3, whose flagship chip was the Thuban X6. Obviously it should be AM3+ if we're comparing to the FX chips.

I wrongly stated AM3 instead of AM3+ but never mind on that.

But really? Old Gulftown 4GHz have the same performance as 5GHz Piledriver core? Is it because of the extra two cores? What about the 4GHz i7 960 with 4 cores 8 thread compared to 5GHz FX 9590?
