I need to get a laptop for someone who is going to start university next year (Sept 2014). I haven't really kept up with tech as of late because of other priorities (the last time I logged in I think was around a year ago if not more). Haswell vs Richland I haven't kept up with, I'm still rocking my Nehalem rig. What I definitely know though is that I'm going to be buying a 120 GB Crucial M500 (unless there's a better SSD option) and cloning the original HDD onto an SSD to put in.

BTW what is the recommended imaging software these days? Clonezilla? TrueImage? etc.

As the sticky says I've copied and pasted the questions and answered them below.

What is your maximum budget?

$650

What country are you in?

Canada

What will be the uses of this laptop?

Word, Internet, Netflix, light gaming (KSP would be the most intensive game), in terms of productivity apps, would also use Minitab/SPSS/SAS on medium sized datasets

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?

Not really but no "crap" brands with high failure rate, this needs to last at least 4 years without me or anyone else having to fiddle with it. The only time I'll be able to fiddle with it is christmas/summer break.

What screen size do you require?

15.6"

What screen resolution do you require?

1366x768 minimum but 1440x900 is better

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?

Must be BNIB with factory warranty and all that jazz (no extended warranty)

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)

5-6 hours battery life should be fine

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?

KSP at medium or medium-high settings at max supported resolution

What operating system do you need? (if any)

Win 7 or 8.1 it doesn't matter

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)

Doesn't matter as long as it does it's job

How much hard drive space do you need?

Will clone HDD onto an SSD purchased separately

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)

Not really, HDMI, USB2, and all that other standard stuff is fine

Is there anything else we need to know?
