New SSHD versus HDD to pair with SSD boot drive?

Thread Starter
My aging Samsung Spinpoint 1TB HDD is getting full so I am looking for a replacement. Right now I use an SSD for Windows + games and programs and my HDD for storage, so the new drive will be used for storage as well as for future games and application installs that wont fit on my SSD (which is already close to being full).

My two options are the 3TB Seagate HDD ($99.99) or the 2TB Seagate SSHD ($119.99).

Will I notice any performance increase for game and application loading times on the SSHD as compared with the traditional HDD in this configuration? Or is it a total waste to use an SSHD as a secondary drive?

Nope. Go for the HDD. Not worth sacrificing 1TB of space for any improvement you might see.

If the HDD is just for storage grab the 3terabyte

I should probably mention I do occasional video editing, compression and work with GIMP as well, and I will be installing large games on this drive. 2TB will be plenty of space for my needs in the foreseeable future. If the SSHD improves loading times on these applications to be similar to the performance I get on my SSD, I would prefer the SSHD over the HDD.

it has a small SSD cache and it works buy moving some of the most used resources into that cache. it will not be as as fast a true SSD though.

SSHD's are only useful as a boot drive due to smaller files being loaded into the 8GB cache, otherwise as storage drive it serves no real purpose. Unless you watch a film or listen to the same songs over and over the cache won't do much and even if you do the cache still is useless because films and songs are played almost instantly, they're not like games or a program that has thousands of smaller files that need to be loaded. This is why the drive takes time 'learning' what it is that you load most often then loads those files in its cache ready for instant access.

Then you should get a SSD itself. Way faster, but low storage space. I am willing to trade in capacity for performance. http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-EVO-Series-2-5-Inch-MZ-7TE1T0BW/dp/B00E3W16OU/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1398042662&sr=8-4&keywords=samsung+840+evo

I already have an SSD as my boot drive. Unfortunately they don't offer much storage for a reasonable price, so it is only able to hold a few basic programs, Windows and a few modern game installs. That is not enough... I need at least 2TB of storage for my second drive, which isn't an option with an SSD. So my question is whether or not an SSHD would be a good compromise for my uses (the SSD will still be used for windows and my most demanding programs).
