Seeking advice for my new powerful computer

Thread Starter
Hello everyone:

I'm willing to pay around 2000 Euros for my new rig that's supposed to serve me for the next 5 years, and I'm willing to get the best Price/Value ratio, but I'm not so experienced with the current components available. I already have some components, and I don't know if I could make some use of them. I play mostly games like Battlefield 4 and Crysis 2/3.

The components I have already:

- EVGA GeForce GTX 670 FTW Signature 2
- Very old (5 years old) OCZ Rams, they could be useful, 2x2 GB, DDR3, PC3 16000, 8-8-8, 2000 MHz (OCZ3FXE20004GK), but perhaps 4 GB is not enough anymore. Please advise.
- Power supply, OCZ 1250 Watt (Golden edition)
- Cooler Master Cosmos S (First version)

The new components I would like to buy are:

- Processor (4930k, costs ~500 Euros)
- Cooler for the processor (Swiftech H220 ~ 120 Euros)
- Motherboard (I really don't know what to get... I need advice on that... I saw ASUS Rampage 4 Extreme, but is it really worth the price ~350 Euros)?
- Graphics card (I had my eye on EVGA Titan Black, but I have the feeling the Price/Value is horrible there. What should I get with the same price? Maybe 2x GTX 780i? Can this go with my current GTX 670 on SLi?).
- More RAM Chips if necessary (will getting new rams improve the performance?).

Every piece there is negotiable if you find it wrong to get because I really don't know what I'm doing here, and I've been busy doing my PhD in particle physics for years that I'm not following anymore... smile.gif

I just tried to pick the best Price/Value, but maybe I'm messing up, and that's why I'm seeking your advice, good people smile.gif

Please advise. Thank you.

well you don't really need X79 & 4930k for gaming really. depending what your doing with the system other than that it might be worth it, but for just gaming z87 & a 4770k would be your best option.

where are you going to be ordering from? should give us an idea of whats available for you.

to save money you can always reuse your case & power supply

id recommend of the top of my head

4770k
Decent z87 mobo
2x 780 ti or 2x 290x
2x 240GB SSD's
8- 16GB of ram

I reckon that's pretty close to 2000 euros

maybe get an AIO watercooler with whats left?

Thank you for your response, korruptedkaos. I'm ordering from Germany/Switzerland, where I live and work. I'm getting a 4930k because I want the setup to live for at least 5 years. Maybe 4770k is good enough for now, but definitely in 2-3 years I'll start having performance problems (as I imagine, maybe I'm wrong).

4930k is only better than 4670k in multi-threaded performance. Neither CPU will be nearly as fast as the best CPU's available in 2020 for single threaded performance.

Honestly, a 5 year upgrade cycle is silly. If you >really< need performance, you'd buy cheaper parts and rotate them once or twice in that time frame.

Any reason that you can't spend 30-60 mins once every 2.5 years to switch out a mobo?

My friend has the same "i absolutely want to build the best stuff and keep it for 8 years" motto but the result is him having a stronger system for the first year, then falling progressively further behind, even though i spent less.

If you absolutely insist on such an upgrade cycle, there is probably something that can be worked out.. but i must say that i don't think it's a very good option thumb.gif

I highly doubt a 4770k wont last 5 years, hey my good old i7 920 is 5 years old & still hanging in there. Is completely up to you though if you want to go X79!

if X79 is what you want, I reckon you will have to increase that budget a little bit more really.

Thank you for your response, Cyro999.

8 Years is really a lot, but 5 years makes sense for many many reasons, especially that computation is reaching it's limit and Moore's law is not gonna work anymore soon. Besides, I had the current rig for 5 years and it's been a very powerful beast for a long time, so I don't care about being the best as much as I care about having something reasonable that'd serve me as long as possible.

No high-performance computer components can live 8 years (but rarely). I think the life time of high-performance computer components is around 5 years. Around that they start breaking and making problems.

Anyway, guys. Please tell me also what you think about having GTX 780TI and my current GTX 670 on SLi.

Well seeing as how Intel has handled CPU development a 5 year cycle may not be that silly. The 3930k released in 2011 and still going strong today when OC'd. No need at all to upgrade. And this could be the case for another year or 2 unless Intel gets off its butts and gives us some real performance gains and not these tiny incremental increases.

Next GPU architecture. Releases expected from ~q3 of this year to ~q1 of next year (nobody really sure)

Kepler and LGA2011 are both 3 year old releases already, that's what is available now

If you can wait, then wait for the GTX8xx (Maxwell cards). While it's been true that if you play the waiting game there's always something better coming, Moore's Law is coming to an end, I doubt we'll see GPU shrinking smaller than 20nm for a while, because 20nm is already more expensive per transistor than 28nm, so Maxwell will be the king for longer than the other cards have been historically. Another reason to wait is the current cards can't do 4k gaming very well (at least the single GPU card), the next gen cards are probably better suited for 4k gaming.
