Windows 7 Start Menu Search: how do I get it to stop doing this? (it's hard to describe)

Thread Starter

So far, I have only noticed it with Winamp and Firefox (it probably does it for other programs - I will have to test it), but here's my first attempt (for now) at describing it:

  1. Open the Start Menu
  2. Type firefox, press the spacebar, type something else, press Enter
  3. It performs an internet search in Firefox for everything that you typed after "firefox"

It does the same thing for Winamp: if I type "winamp backup" for "winamp backup tool", it will attempt to play "backup". lol

Do you know how to get the Windows 7 Start Menu Search to not do this?

Edit: It does it with Google Chrome, but not Internet Explorer.

Try Internet Explorer again by typing "iexplore" and see what it does.  My guess is that when it finds a matching application name, it assumes that the rest of your search term is the command to send to that application.
Did you have your system set up in the past not to do this, or has it always done this?

Yep, it did it.

I don't know if it has always done this. I think that I'm just now noticing. It looks like it's some kind of a feature. lol Like Microsoft said, "Hey, I bet our customers will LOVE this!"

The first time I noticed it, I wanted to open Winamp Backup Tool. It was the first time that I ever opened it from the Start Menu search because I'm very new to this program. Knowing that I didn't have any other programs that start with "winamp b", I just typed "winamp b" and pressed Enter without even thinking. Then, Winamp opened trying to play "b". Faceaplm. So, I was like, "What?!" Then, I typed "winamp backup tool" and I watched in amazement as the Start Menu did NOT select the Winamp Backup Tool, but instead it selected Winamp and then put "backup tool" after it. As a test, I pressed Enter. Winamp opened of course, and tried to play "backup" and "tool".

Then later on I wanted to install Firefox Beta. I already had Firefox installed and I already had the Beta installer and I also knew that the installer began with "firefox setup stub". Well, as you might have guessed, Firefox opened searching for "setup" and "stub". heh

So, it's just kind of annoying, but I guess it's really only annoying when setting up a fresh install or when preparing to format and start over. Still... I wish it wouldn't do it.

The problem is Windows has so many features and settings hidden away it can be very hard to find certain ones.

I think it is a parameter. I bet if you type what you do in search as a parameter for a shortcut, you get the same result.
