Why can't they use copper/aluminum fin stack array like seen on the X79 WS ?

The Z87 WS is by far my favorite looking motherboard that has been released in recent years. Photos do not do it justice.

What does 5-way optimization mean?

Where's the mATX or ITX Z97 board for the everyman? One without all the ELITE or ROG or LIQUID NITROGEN OVERCLOCKER for maybe half the price

.

Post machining aluminum extrusions into shape and anodize finishing can make it just as expensive as an aluminum fin stack. Not sure if people remember old times when motherboards actually use real heatsinks than a block of ricer shaped colored aluminum seen on todays motherboards. I believe this was during times when boards had Nvidia chipsets on them, which were known to ran hot.

Exactly, If I was to hop on X79 from the start, I'd definately grab an X79-WS-E on day one release. I'm looking forward to its successor on X99.
Not only it looks attractive and minimal, it has that professional look that defines a real workstation board. thumb.gif

Ranger? Why did ASUS come up with a name like that?

I thought they were set with their current lineup already being Extreme, Formula, Hero, and Gene in that particular order? Unless I am mistaken that Ranger isn't part of the ROG family?

Knowing Asus, it's another additional board to the ROG line-up with Extreme, Formula and Impact to be released later.

According to a Chinese translation I read, the Ranger is Z97's entry level ROG board, just like Hero was for Z87. If I had to guess, Extreme remains the OC marketed one, Formula the gaming marketed board, the Hero the new ATX mainstream ROG board, the Gene the microATX version, Impact soon to be released miniITX version, and the Ranger the new stripped down ROG board.
